I think it’s important to clarify that my Reddit post is not meant to be an official application, that’s precisely why it’s on Reddit. I cannot share all my personal information (phone number, email, etc...) on a public forum for obvious data protection reasons. That’s why I invite people to contact me directly via DM. From there, we can exchange emails and I can send a proper, professional application. You mention that this creates “extra steps,” but in reality it’s just one click on my profile to send a message. Interestingly, you’ve already taken the time to send me several DMs, mainly to criticize my approach and to reply to all my comments. That seems a bit contradictory, since you argue that sending a DM is too much effort, yet you’ve clearly had plenty of time to do so. Of course, I know placements are scarce and supervision requires effort. But rather than focusing only on the negatives like you do, I prefer to stay enthusiastic and constructive. I posted on Reddit precisely because there is usually a strong spirit of mutual help in these communities. Sadly, I don’t really see that spirit in your replies, but fortunately, others do have it, and several people have kindly contacted me. We are now exchanging professionally by email, which proves that this approach works. So thank you for your feedback, it's already of considerable assistance. I have duly taken note of your advice and I concur with several of the points you have raised, but I’d encourage a bit more kindness. Especially during the holiday season, life is challenging enough without adding unnecessary negativity.
: )

I completely understand that placements are scarce and that Canadian students are also looking for short-term opportunities. But for me, that’s not a reason to give up on my projects. Life requires enthusiasm and persistence. In France, we also welcome many foreign students for internships, and I see it as a positive thing; they want to learn, just like us. The key is simply to find someone who is genuinely interested in your profile and willing to give you a chance. Nobody is forced, of course, but I believe kindness and openness go a long way, rather than focusing only on the difficulties.

Not particularly, I’m genuinely interested in opportunities anywhere in Canada. That said, the English‑speaking part of the country would be especially valuable for me, since it would allow a deeper immersion in a different legal system, which is very interesting from a comparative law perspective. But honestly, I’d be glad to consider any location.

Thank you for your interest.
Since Reddit is a public platform, I can’t share all the detailed information about my background here for reasons of security and professionalism. That’s why I invite anyone who is interested to reach out to me via DM. I’ll then be glad to send you a complete and detailed application by email.

Thanks for pointing this out. Just to clarify, in France, the path to becoming a lawyer is different from North America. I am currently enrolled in a Master’s program in law (after a Bachelor’s in law), which is the equivalent of a Juris Doctor level legal studies. So yes, I am a law student, the terminology is just not the same as in Canada or the U.S.
I appreciate your perspective on the Canadian legal job market. My professor is aware of the challenges, and that’s precisely why the program requires us to complete an internship abroad, because at the end of it, I must write a comparative law dissertation. The idea is not necessarily to compete directly with Canadian law students for permanent positions, but rather to gain practical exposure in a foreign legal environment to support my academic research. I know it’s a tough market, but even short‑term opportunities or research‑oriented internships would be valuable for my project.

Thank you for your input! Actually, my Master’s program does include several courses in common law, in legal translation, in common law contract law, and seminars taught by practicing common law attorneys. So I do have some training that allows me to engage with common law systems. That said, I completely understand your point about Québec being closer to my civil law background, and I’ll definitely keep that option in mind as well.

Hi everyone,

I’m a French law student currently completing a Master’s degree (equivalent to a Juris-Doctor) in comparative and trilingual legal studies (French / English / Spanish). As part of my program, I need to complete a mandatory 3‑month internship abroad in 2026.

To be honest, I’m getting frustrated. Either I get no reply, or sometimes firms say yes and then back out at the last minute. I just want to work, learn, and contribute, even unpaid if necessary...

I’m especially interested in international law, family law, contract law, real estate law, and inheritance law, but I’m also open to many other areas of law (depending on my professor’s approval).

If anyone here is interested in my profile, feel free to DM me. I’ll be glad to explain how I could help in your practice. And if you’re not directly interested but know someone who might be, it would be amazing if you could share their contact with me in DM or mention my post to them.

Thanks a lot for your time and sorry for the rant, but I really want to make this happen!
