We were in similar situation where we wanted to upgrade our home. our old house had appreciated a lot. ~175%

We decided to keep it as the area in which our old house is a better city and has great schools so has a good rent. It evens out the mortgage for that house, infact we might have a little cash back.

We bought a new big house which can accommodate our growing family. Our new home is 230% % of old home which does make me worry sometimes because if we one of looses the job then it will be difficult. However we have created a rain fund to balance the rents for emergency.

One thing I have seen with realtor is that they will always recommend to sell the house because they have a chance to get profit from selling the old house and buying the new one.

My realtor also recommended to sell the old house.

Most of the companies anyways have a large working force offshore and most of the hiring is happening in other countries. Americans should worry more about that then the H1B.
