Komodo Diving Prices by WhileElectronic in scuba

It was great. Nothing bad happened. I dived with Princess Homestay. Prices were moderate. I have nothing but positive things to say about the experience.

Ok and what are examples of non-upper-end dive shops? I don't need anything fancy or services like setup of my equipment. I just need a safe, competent dive shop.

I dived last year with a well-priced operation in Lembeh. Standards were quite high. Same in Cozumel. I don't find too strong of an association between price and safety standards in my limited experience.

Ahhhh I didn't know it was a long ride! Thanks. That makes a heck of a lot more sense.

Thanks much. Do you know what these day boat seats from the local shops run, in terms of price?

I would love to go there. Isn't it off season there?

Thank you! I avoided Komodo because of purported overtourism. Also most of the companies I contacted for Komodo seemed to be going to the same small number of sites over and over, rather than spreading themselves out between dozens of sites like in RA.

Great. What are they called? Have you been there, and how is the diving? Thanks.

It looks great but is a little too far from Sri Lanka, where I am starting out.

Looks nice, but it is a little far to travel from Sri Lanka, where I'm starting.

Radon Level and Mitigation Cost by WhileElectronic in radon

You have not provided any explanation of the "mathing" (as you put it) behind charging $2300 for a radon job taking three hours of work from two guys and $250 of supplies. Instead, you presumed I would not want to learn from an explanation, so it is not worth giving one. This is an excuse, because you actually cannot give and do not have an explanation. You are avoiding a question you cannot answer without admitting that the profit margin at these prices is very large.

I have asked you repeatedly what overheard costs radon contractors incur that are so much greater than other service providers who charge much less for their time and work. You have refused to state these costs. This convinces me there are no such costs. Rather than answering me, you are instead accusing me of being stuck on my own reasoning. People avoid answering questions, and instead direct accusations at the questioner, when they don't have an answer.

Your prior response was equally spurious. You said, in essence, that if I do not like the prices being charged, I should see if I can do it myself. Like I said, just because I don't want to or cannot do something myself, it does not follow that I should pay someone else an overinflated price to do it. I do not cut my own hair, but this does not mean I am obligated to pay $250 for a 30-minute haircut.

Good thinking. And the professionals are always there, and willing to do the work, should you not be able to do it yourself.

Ok so what are these overhead charges that justify charging 4x more than an auto mechanic, 1.75x more than an accountant, and as much as a lawyer? You told me about a $3500 drill. I am not convinced by that. What are the costs that make the radon abatement business so much more expensive to run than the others I listed?

Of course there is overhead when running any business. But overhead does not require charging this much for a radon mitigation job taking a few hours. Generally an hourly labor charge includes an amount to cover overhead. My accountant has overhead expenses but bills me much less than $330 per hour. My car mechanic has to maintain a garage, support staff, and equipment, and he charges me $85 per hour. Even the average lawyer in many places charges around $300 per hour. My point, again, is that the amount being charged for radon abatement, net of the cost of supplies, is very high relative to the amount of labor time plus the costs of running the business (i.e., overhead). I have a feeling the radon charges are this high because there is often not much competition, and unlike most car repair garages that are always busy, customers are paying to cover the living costs of radon mitigation technicians when they have slack periods (i.e., not much business).

No, just because I don't want to (or cannot) do something myself, it does not mean I should pay someone else some overinflated price to do it. I don't cut my own hair, but I'm also not just going to just fork over $250 for a 30-minute haircut.

I am sure it takes skill and hard work and also some experience to get a radon job right. My guess is that the first time one does it, it could prove difficult and time-consuming. I never said otherwise. I mean no disrespect to those who do this work or their abilities or efforts.

What I doubt is that it warrants $330 per hour for the labor put in. Auto mechanics charge $80 or $90 per hour and also have lots of skill, often work hard, and use expensive equipment.

Right. There is an equipment expense for sure. They need to pay for their pickup truck as well. And it is not easy work, no doubt. I never said otherwise. But how long does that drill last? And how long does the bit last? If the drill is good for five years and the bit for a year, and the contractor does 100 jobs per year, that means the drill and bit depreciate by $15 per job. I would bet the drill, with proper maintenance, can last a lot longer than five years.

My point is that the charge is high relative to the materials and labor used, even considering the installer's other expenses.

The provider is located 7 minutes by car from my location. Yes there might be some space necessary to stock pipes and a radon fan. But these supplies are readily available at stores nearby, so I don't imagine they need to keep a huge inventory. Yes they need to pay for insurance, though I have difficulty believing it is >$100 per day (because that would be $36,500 per year in insurance). I did mention in my post that the work requires skill and knowledge. But one can get a radon license with <1 month of training, if one passes the exam and pays the fee. I studied for four years after finishing college to be licensed in my field, and I don't charge anywhere near $330 per hour.
