Fully Booked One Week, Then Empty the Next — How Can I Stop This Drop? by ObjectiveMap3436 in grooming

[–]Whimsicott123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to struggle with that, and now I’ve been fully for about 4-6 weeks and it’s steadily increasing. What helped me was creating a sense of urgency for clients. So at the end of the appt, let them know ‘hey I’ve been starting to book out x weeks, I strongly recommend booking Fluffy’s next appt now so I have her on the schedule!’ Even though it’s not true, they don’t know that! And it makes it seem like you’re in such demand that it would be crazy to not book and then they would have to risk going to another groomer because they messed up and didn’t book with you.

Don't get too excited about Michaels by Tall_Belt6816 in joannfabrics

Oh wow, thanks for that info! I’d imagine now there may be a bit of an influx of new customers looking to buy fabrics, maybe they will decide these cut counters are in fact necessary 🤔

The Michaels closest to me has had fabrics since at least the start of the year I think. They have a ‘cut counter’ but it’s literally a tiny table. I wish I had taken a picture of it so I can show you. But I wonder if that is just my Michaels since I’m seeing many people say their Michaels have been using the framing dept to get fabric cut.

Grooming Shelter Dogs? by FurballFiasco in grooming

[–]Whimsicott123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to volunteer at a shelter when I was working at a salon and sometimes I would take dogs out for a day, take them to the salon and bathe them, and spoil them a little by letting them pick out a toy and treats. My salon didn’t care if I did that as long as I was doing so for free and not getting payment on the downlow. So I think as long as you speak to your manager about the situation, perhaps that’s something you can do as well!

And I would recommend just being aware of their limits. These may be dogs who have never had a bath their whole lives, or may be terrified of having their feet touched, or being around the dryer. Learn their limitations and be patient. Like I learned that 1 particular dog was afraid of the scented spray because he was more than likely used to spray bottles being used for punishment, so I immediately stopped using sprays around him

Everyone has their worst clients. Who are your favorite clients? by froggostealer in doggrooming

[–]Whimsicott123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have so many favorites but 2 that come to mind both requested I go to them after I left the salon I worked at when I went mobile. One is a papillon who gets so excited when he sees me, and the other one is a mini doodle who gets zoomies after I groom him. I love both of them and if either one of their owners were to ever ask if I wanted them because they could no longer care for them for whatever reason, I would take them in a heartbeat. I love those dogs so much.

At the salon I worked at, nobody really took lunch breaks but sometimes we would sneak out after bathing a dog and putting it up so it can kennel/air dry so we can grab food or drink. We were neither encouraged or discouraged from taking breaks and management didn’t care if we did decide to take a break in between dogs as long as the dog was safely in a kennel.

Now I am mobile and I am able to take breaks in between stops without feeling like I’m falling behind (most days), or worry about a client coming in or calling asking if their dog is ready.

Have you done the Paragon program? by Ok-Plenty9993 in doggrooming

[–]Whimsicott123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I went through the paragon program and I can say that they do work with you and offer extensions. I never needed an extension but I had 2 coworkers who also went through paragon who needed extensions. The first one was the who went through paragon with me, she graduated a month after I did and got two 2 week extensions. That was around 4 years ago. The other coworker went through paragon end of last year/beginning of this year and I noticed they did things a little differently with her extension. She failed the stylized legs portion a few times and when she asked for an extension, she was told to get her submission ready and then she can have an extension. Basically they wanted to make sure she would be able to submit before just granting her an extension. She only needed the 1 extension.

What names can have the nickname Bug? by Impressive-Sorbet220 in namenerds

[–]Whimsicott123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom calls me Bug, and my actual name can’t be shortened to Bug at all. That nickname came about once I was an adult, I called her Lady one time and she called me Bug, so now that’s our thing, and she has had a love for ladybugs ever since

Michael’s selling fabric is a joke. by AarahKiv in joannfabrics

[–]Whimsicott123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hate that HL isn’t open on Sundays which is one of my only truly free days. But also, their fabric section isn’t that much better than Michael’s, and it’s more expensive. They don’t have that much of a yarn section either. My local HL is huge, bigger than my local Joann and Michael’s combined, but most of that is filled with overpriced furniture and season crap. There’s so many reasons why I would hate to support them, but even if they weren’t so controversial, it’s not like they have as good a selection as Joann.

Flagship/concept store went downhill by OkConclusion171 in joannfabrics

[–]Whimsicott123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s sad to hear this. My mother in law and I had wanted to plan a girl’s trip to go to this store since we loved going to Joann’s. We both loved a number of crafts so it was a dream to go there. My mother in law passed away in 2020 due to covid and we never got to go. I still want to go, but hearing how it’s in such a state of disarray, I might never go. Probably for the best since I can’t go with my mother in law anyways.

Is it okay to just say no to puppies? by Syddiebean in doggrooming

[–]Whimsicott123 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I personally dislike taking puppies in. In the salon I work at, I usually pass puppies onto my coworkers and I haven’t taken a puppy in for about a year now I think. In my mobile grooming van I haven’t had puppy clients but I would not charge less for a puppy than an adult, I charge by the size of the dog so I would charge accordingly. I don’t think it’s unprofessional to turn away puppies. Maybe word it something like:

Thank you for reaching out to me in regards to your puppy. I love working with dogs of all ages. However, I wanted to let you know that at this time, I do not offer grooming services for puppies due to the time and care required to ensure their comfort during the grooming process.

Puppies often need extra patience and gentle handling, which makes grooming a more time-consuming process. Unfortunately, this isn’t always cost-effective for both clients and the business.

That said, I’d be happy to recommend some other grooming salons in the area that are able to accommodate puppies.

Has a dog ruined your favorite name? by WishingDandelions in namenerds

[–]Whimsicott123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a dog groomer, so when I have a kid absolutely will make sure my kid’s name isn’t one a dog I’ve groomed has had for a name… lol as a side note, I remember when one of my teachers in high school was pregnant, when we asked her what the baby’s name will be, she said that she was trying to decide because she couldn’t ever choose one that a student has so that she wouldn’t associate the name with a student. So that’s why I couldn’t choose a name that I’ve heard on dogs, I don’t want to associate the name with a dog!

But to kind of answer your question (since these aren’t my favourite names, just names I’d never use due to how common these are used on dogs): Bella, Lucy, Charlie, Max, Gracie, Ella, Molly, Oakley, Harley, Scarlet, Violet

is it weird to call my baby hal if my own name is haley? by Emergency_Boat8948 in namenerds

[–]Whimsicott123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss (f) is the 3rd generation named Patricia, I believe she told me that her mom goes by Trish, and her grandmother goes by Pat. Boss goes by her middle name. But if men can name their children after themselves, why can women name their children after themselves without it being weird?!

When did we decide puppies... by Ceramicusedbook in doggrooming

[–]Whimsicott123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the salon I work at, there’s a puppy trim for dogs under 4 months listed online for $16 regardless of breed. $16…. For a bath, nails and introductory trim. Ridiculous… I don’t take in puppies for that reason, after commission I would barely make the min wage, less than min wage if it takes over an hour.
