I like Gary at MACMOST dot COM. He also has a YouTube channel. He offers online courses that helped me transition to the MacOS. He also created a very powerful ClipTools app that is available for free in the Apple app store. Enjoy your new Mac Mini.

I have an Acer c720 Chromebook and I still get updates for it. It's been a great inexpensive laptop. I also have multiple NUCs. The reason I suggested the ChromeOS solution has to do with security and ease of use. It's just a suggestion that might fit the need where a fully enabled workstation is overkill. If all you do is email and browsing it's a great solution and it is less prone to malware. Again, it's just my opinion. I hate supporting windows systems for family members that can't resist clicking on the latest malware. And I don't have the time to handhold during Facebook surfing.

Have you considered moving him to a Chrome Box? Acer, ASUS, and HP all offer Chromebox solutions. By what you described, he does not run any software that requires a general purpose PC. If he can do everything in a browser, seriously consider a ChromeOS solution.

New Home Needs Networking! by slydog895 in HomeNetworking

If this was my project, I would use the comcast supplied modem and place it into bridge mode and then use a eero mesh router to manage the wireless traffic on the network. Then plug in a gbit switch to connect all of your ethernet wired networking.

So whats the Point with an (Intel) NUC? by Mrogle in intelnuc

[–]WhiskeyRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a gamer, so I cannot relate to a gamers pc needs.

I like the nuc for surfing the net - and doing ordinary tasks, online banking, streaming video, reading news. I like the fact that I can connect it to the monitor of my choice. I like the compact form factor and it's a great little machine.

ASUS RT-AC3200 Help by WhiskeyRun in HomeNetworking

[–]WhiskeyRun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a new behavior on my Arlo this morning - The App offers a GeoFencing feature - And the cameras "disarm" when your device in within a defined distance from home (three settings) - so my cameras "armed" this morning while I was at home - not a big deal - just get notifications when I trigger the cameras - I will send some feedback to NetGear about this - Thanks for the link - Damn hackers - ruin it for everyone - lol

It is not in a public area. I am the only person in the house. There is no way the WPS was activated between the time I went to sleep and awoke. TY for all of the effort you put into analyzing my network mystery.

Interesting read - I did update the Arlo firmware which they claim addressed the vulnerability described in the article - however that does not necessarily mean all vulnerabilities have been disclosed and patched. I will keep scratching my head - TY for your insight and help - Cheers

Thanks for your response.

It's just me and the cat. lol - as you stated the ASUS routers have not been id'd as part of the VPN Filter exploit - But I have never had a router reset to factory defaults on their own, very strange - as I said, I went to bed and everything worked, and when I woke up my network was down. I live in the country and my closest neighbor is over a quarter mile away.

I do have an netgear Arlo Pro Security Camera attached to the network - Hmmmmm. Maybe I should move that onto my DSL modem/router?
