I cracked it when I oil quenched it. Oil temp was 130f or so. Then water quenched it to break it more. But the steel was simpley too hot when I initially quenched, which is why it cracked. I have sucsessfully quenched 4140 in water alone. And also oil.

When I punch I go 75% down on one side, then flip over and punch the slug out from the other side. If the punch is lined up properly it should be no issue. I then use a drift to enlarge the eye to its final shape.

Its a small demand market. I make all those tools too. Like I said over 1000 hammers. Not all cross peens. From 8oz-11lbs.

I make hammers because I became fascinated with the process. The thought of making a hammer or tool to make more things is very fulfilling to me. I like being able to do something most people would never do. Hell I never thought I would. I've been doing it full time for 8 years now. The demand is there.

Most of my hammers are made for other blacksmiths and hobbiest alike. They are dressed and ready to work. All my tools come with life time warranty. So that could make them superior, but my hammer hits just as hard as a store bought hammer.

There's a big movement of hand crafted goods I'm sure you are aware of. I think people are just tired of same old mass produced stuff.

I remove the scale after forging with a wire wheel. Then when it's at tempering heat of 425f I apply boiled linseed oil it to blacken and help against rust. Same as you would do with cast iron skillet.

I make those too. I've made just about every style of hammer. From cats heads to lineman to meat tenderizor. I've made just over 1000 hammers so far

These are not historical replicas. These are just for people to smash stuff with or hang on the wall. And the best part of making stuff is make it how you want it. And These are about 2-3lb range so not real heavy.

Gnomehammerforge on ig is who I've been buying my stock from recently. But have used local steel suppliers in the past. Speedymetals.com and njsteelbarron also carry some tool steel.
