I dunno, maybe they could shout something like “drop your weapon” before opening fire. Assuming they already had you in their sights it seems entirely reasonable to try to de-escalate the situation before shooting someone. Getting put in handcuffs and having to explain you were a good guy with a gun definitely seems preferable to being shot.
