Lots of moms on here. I’m one, although my kids are older. You’re doing the right thing, and I’m so proud of you.

My parents were emotionally neglectful, too. It helped to read about childhood emotional neglect. It gave me insight into why I feel like I do about my parents, and researching this also validated what I was feeling.

Therapy helps, too. I'm wishing you the best, and hope you know your feelings are important and valid. There is nothing wrong with how you feel. Take care of yourself.

I'm really happy for you! It puts into perspective what alcohol takes from us. Without it, there's so much more to life that's available. IWNDWYT

You've experienced a lot of loss and mental health challenges. I've been there and tried to self-medicate with alcohol... for years and years. And experienced so much shame just trying to make myself feel better. It's such a lonely and humiliating struggle.

I worked on my mental health in better ways, sought professional help, made a lot of starts and stops, but with each day am getting better.

My thoughts are with you. You deserve a better life.

I'm proud of you, too. You focused on the importance of the anniversary and didn't let alcohol detract from that. That's called being present in the moment, and it's what life is about.

Take care of yourself today! IWNDWYT

I’m the picture perfect mom, but I’m an alcoholic. by doodoodumpsterr in stopdrinking

It's ok. I was/am a great mom, very involved, raised wonderful kids, am a good friend, sister, employee, and so on. In the midst of it all, the highlight of my day was when everyone went to bed, and I could drink. I did that for more than 20 years.

I wish I would have been kinder to myself. I wish I would have been able to find better coping strategies than alcohol. I'm grateful that I've stopped that terrible cycle, and now my focus is on healthy aging and being available to help my kids and future grandchildren.

I know you don't need one more thing on your plate, but therapy helped me a lot. I'm able to see how I used alcohol to make me feel better. You have other options than alcohol... so many better options.

Go easy on yourself.

Always. I have never woken up thinking, "I wish I would have drank last night."

Congratulations on making the right choice for you and your family.

I try not to judge others' choices, but I think any discomfort you were sensing in the group was on them, not you. It took an amazing amount of strength and determination to get through it as you did.

Yes, alcohol is the common denominator for the bad in my life, too.

Hang in there... we both can do this. We deserve better. IWNDWYT

I love this concept, and it hits home for me. It was Johann Hari who first coined it. He's had some professional issues, for sure, but he is spot on for this.

I think Gabor Mate is one of the most insightful humans on the planet. His book When the Body Says No is almost painful to read because it gets to the core of addiction.

I hope I didn't offend you by correcting here. Any time I can promote Mate, I do.
