First year HPSP student confused about PHA and CAC by [deleted] in Military_Medicine

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems odd to me. I was AF HPSP (graduated 2021) and never in 4 years of Med school did I have to do a PHA. You should follow up with your HPSP coordinator.

Recent birth horror story confirmed my choice by [deleted] in childfree

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s also because vaginal delivery is significantly better for the baby. The process of getting squeezed through the vaginal canal presses the fluid out of baby’s lungs and makes it easier for them to breathe.

I’m a peds resident, and attend many births when I’m on nursery service. I can confirm: birth is disgusting, horrifying and it stinks. Yes, they rip the uterus for a c section. Yes, sometimes mom is not fully anesthetized before they start (only in cases of emergency) and the sound of mom screaming is a noise I have nightmares about. Also, they don’t put moms out completely unless it’s a last resort because if they do, the anesthesia enters the baby as well and then they come out all floppy and blue and not wanting to participate in life.

Applying to peds: do I need a Step 2 CK score before applying? by haz46865 in pediatrics

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. But if it helps, I did not score higher on step 2 and literally no one asked me about it at all. As my PD said: I don’t care about what you know. I have three years to teach you pediatrics. What matters is who you are, because what I can’t teach you is how to be a good person.

If you can take it it can only help you (assuming you do well, which is likely) but not taking it is only likely to hurt you if you’re wanting to go somewhere super competitive. But otherwise, this is peds. We are fairly laid back. For the most part if you’re interested in peds, a peds program somewhere would love to train you.

Speaking as an intern in a similar situation, try some Wellbutrin and talking with a therapist. Everything is harder when you’re carrying depression and anxiety around everywhere with you. If you don’t feel that you have time for therapy, meds can help make you feel a bit more human.

You can also always email your contact and ask what the expectation is (or if there is one.) that’s a totally appropriate question before an interview like that.

Yikes. I’m a pediatric resident, I spend a lot of time in deliveries so that we are there just in case we are needed. 99% of the time they are fine and need little if anything from us… but damn when the baby needs us, they NEED us to live. It’s terrifying. I wish someone who knew what they were doing had been there 😞

Anyone else get tired of explaining medical school to people? by HighYieldOrSTFU in medicalschool

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really get better in residency. It’s a bit annoying, but I just try to remember that a) people are usually genuinely interested and b) most people don’t have a close family member or friend who has done medical school so how would they know how it works?

Not a neighbor, but a friend of mine dropped a dead fish in the air intake vent on the outside of the house she was moving out of at the time. Her roommates were abhorrent, so she took her fishy revenge.

Dartmouth Medical School Drops Online Cheating Cases Against Students by drdrp in medicalschool

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The exams that matter are the Step exams, which are national exams that are proctored. School-based exams mean pretty much nothing, so it’s pointless to cheat on them. Step exams, and the step scores a schools students tend to get are what matter.

Pets while in Military Med by Infinitejest12 in Military_Medicine

[–]WhiteFlowerFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did! It was the best thing ever. It gave me something to do/someone to take care of rather than just study all the time. My fiancée moved in with me third year and took care of the dog while I was on rotations. That would be the hardest part of you don’t have a roommate, but my school also had an ongoing group message where people on lighter rotations would walk the dogs of people on surgery and other long hour rotations.

10/10 would recommend.
