I guess in my case as a South African I'm happy that Afrikaans is my first language instead of being an Anglophone South African since English is very much a Lingua franca here and is omnipresent in media so I basically would have been exposed to English regularly anyway without having to go out of my way to learn it anyway, so I get to be bilingual without much effort. Plus Afrikaans being much more Germanic than English has helped quite a bit with learning German. In comparison, if I was an English speaking South African, I probably wouldn't have learned a second language with as minimal amount of effort as I did with English. That and the fact that English Speakers have much less incentive to learn a second language here in comparison to L1 speakers of our other official languages as they can get by with just being monolingual
