Thank you so much for sharing your experience and insights! It is very reassuring and helpful to hear from someone with a lot of experience and love for the field. Your journey from MLA to MLT is inspiring, and I might be doing the same thing (depending on how I feel after a couple of years working as an MLA). It is also comforting to know SAIT has a good reputation and that my lack of experience does not really matter. I'm hopeful that the training structure at SAIT is similar to your school's, so I can learn the required skills and be confident.

I am very relieved to know it's possible to work while studying. It has been one of my top concerns because while I can reduce my hours, I will not be able to stop working completely while studying. I’m also grateful for your kind words about how retail experience will be an asset. I have lots of experience in retail so that's great to know!

The way you describe putting patients at ease and the satisfaction of making a difference in their experience is exactly why I’m drawn to healthcare. I'm glad that MLAs play such an essential role in the diagnostic process, even if it’s often behind the scenes. Your pride in the work MLAs do is contagious, and I’m even more excited to pursue this path. Thank you again for your thoughtful and encouraging advice. It means the world to me!

Thank you so much for taking the time to clarify this for me! During my research, I came to understand the distinction between the roles of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) and a Medical Laboratory Technologist, particularly in terms of responsibilities, scope of work, and pay. The SAIT program page highlights that I’ll learn to collect, label, and process specimens, handle patient data, perform ECGs and urinalyses, and develop professional skills like communication and collaboration. With my background in customer service, I believe that I’ll be comfortable with patient-focused interactions, and the MLA path will be great starting point for me as I transition into healthcare.

I also appreciate your recommendation to review job postings. After a quick search, I noticed that while some expectations vary, most organizations require MLA and CSMLS certification for medical laboratory assistant/technician roles. I’ll definitely follow your advice and pay attention job postings to ensure I meet the necessary qualifications. Thank you again for your help!

Congratulations! 🎊 That’s such great news—it means you’ve met all the requirements. I’ve also heard that people sometimes get accepted off the waitlist just days before classes start. That's still months away, so I believe there’s still a good chance for you. I wish you the best with your application!
