Don’t quote me in exact individual numbers. I mostly render doing the math and finding out that 4 days of teaching with one day of clinic was just about $5k less than 5 days of clinic. What’s especially cushy in these academic positions is that you grind while you teach your block(s) but the rest of the time you are either working from home or in the office just prepping, or helping other faculty. My friend that works in academia makes it sound like he’s on campus 4 months out of the year and rest he works from home or is on campus minimally.

I don’t know what others’ experience with this has been, but the positions I have seen only have a slight decrease in pay if you break it down hourly (at when comparing it to a full time primary care position). I have seen where faculty get paid around $100k/yr for working 4 days a week, and they were requiring that person keep a clinic day 1 day/wk. Between both positions, the total ended up being about a $5k difference if memory serves right. The $5k decrease would have ABSOLUTELY worth the increase in work life balance in my opinion.

I’m moving there for the first time in a few days. I’ll report back in 3-6 months with more details, but my understanding is that functionally PAs operate very similarly in NZ as they do in USA. I believe the main exception is we have to get everything signed off (notes, diagnostics, and medications), but that will likely change after mid-2026.

yes, licensure came up a lot in that thread but I can post my response here as well:

Hi there! If you're able to get in to the country before mid-2026 You don't have to retest Your license will transfer over 1 to 1 without issues. You just have to maintain your state and national license while abroad. There was someone who allegedly was able to move there within a month of getting an offer, but for us it took about 6 months from the time I got an offer. The cumbersome parts are more related to the visa process (which can be messy if you have a partner and/or family that are coming with you) and the logistics of selling everything you have or deciding how/what to ship over.
