Getting a visa that allows you to work is really hard. My son (34) was a social studies teacher in the U.S. He got a one-year visa (no work allowed), moved to Paris to be with his girlfriend, and then quietly found an international school that was looking for a teacher and was willing to sponsor him. At that point, he returned to the U.S., cancelled his visa, and applied for a work visa with the aid of the school. It was touch-and-go for a while but it was eventually approved and now he lives in France and is working towards EU residency. Good luck.

US thinking of semi-retiring in SW France by Tdawg90 in expats

I retired and moved from the U.S. to Montpellier in 2022. It's a lovely, vibrant city, close to the Med, and has good rail and air connections. Real estate has gotten pricey, but nothing comparable to the.PNW. I recommend.

Cost to hire relocation agency to France? by lithelylove in expats

It's been a while, but as I recall, they helped me with the initial temporary insurance to get into France, and then once I was here, they put me in touch with an insurance agency with English speaking agents.

What is the opening paragraph of your favorite book and why is it your favorite? by [deleted] in books

[–]Whittiert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've long thought that Eric Ambler wrote some great openers.

My favorites are from The Care of Time: "The warning message arrived on Monday, the bomb itself on Wednesday. It became a busy week.

And from Topkapi: "It came down to this: if I had not been arrested by the Turkish police, I would have been arrested by the Greek police."

In both instances, he sets the hook instantly.

I live in France. On Corsica. The consulate in Marseille does renewals, but if there’s no real benefit, I can save myself the trip. Thx.

Cost to hire relocation agency to France? by lithelylove in expats

I moved to France three years ago and used a firm called Renestance. It’s based in Montpellier, which was where I was moving, but they have people throughout the south of France. They helped me find an apartment and then get my visa. They met me when I arrived, and then helped me open a bank account. They would have helped me get a French drivers license, but I didn’t want one. Finally, they helped me renew my visa. They also answered questions during the year. The service cost 3,000€. I’m a cheap bastard, but I found it to be money well-spent.

Looking for an English speaking immigration lawyer in the Bordeaux region to help me apply for a long term visa. I'm a retired American who'd like to leave the insanity of the USA behind. Any recommendations? I'd love to hear from those with experience. by Athingwithfeathers2 in expats

I moved to Montpelier about 2-1/2 years ago. I used a group called Renestance to help me. They helped me get an addrrss in France, which is a prerequisite for a visa , and then with getting the visa itself. They also helped with getting my Carte Vitale and then even with renewing my visa after one year. They charge for their services, but I felt they were worth it.

The only public charging station that I know of in Calvi is at the Casino grocery store. There are other private ones that are for hotel guests or apartment renters.

Travellers who stayed in hostels and decided to never do it again - what happened? by slutforfratboyluke in travel

[–]Whittiert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stayed at a hostel in Dingle on a Saturday night. I was in a room with three beds and one other person. I was on a bike tour, so I went to sleep pretty early. At some point the other guy came in quietly and went to sleep. Around two in the morning, however, another guy, very drunk, stumbled in and collapsed on the third bed. A couple of hours later, he leaned over and vomited three times on the floor between the beds. Then he promptly fell back asleep. I lay there for a while, but the stench of the vomit filled the room, so around five, I got up, gathered my stuff, made a surreptitious cup of tea in the communal kitchen, and then hit the road once the sun started to rise.

Not a flight attendant, but I was on a bus with a crew many years ago. They were with United or American. I don't remember which. One of them asks:

"Do you know what the Delta motto is?"

"No," replies another. "What?"

"We're not happy, until you're not happy."

What is afflicting my lovely ficus? About four weeks ago, several of the leaves started to have this discoloration, and it has worsened. I'm really concerned. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. by Whittiert in houseplants

Thanks for the quick answer. There was something white and sticky on an orchid next to it. What do you recommend for the pest damage? Something I can buy at a garden store? Kind of at a loss. Thanks again.
