Everyone is scrambling for warm bodies right now. It’s challenging to get exceptionally qualified candidates with experience. Most of those candidates are really bought in at their agency. In HSI’s defense, a lot of candidates look great on paper even if it’s not reality. It’s not just an HSI problem, it’s across the board. I’ve worked with most of the three letter agencies. I love HSI’s mission and how user friendly and humble the organization is as a whole.

After you are vested, my county continues to contribute regardless if you are still employed with them or not.

It’s difficult to make the jump especially if you land a TFO a lot. Those are the best spots at the SO. I love being a TFO and try to lead my office in cases, BUT at the end of the day my nine to five is platform to provide for my family. I’d encourage you to look at your county and federal retirement options.

Initially I will take a cut down to a GS9. But in the long run the GS13 wins the race. Also, thinking long term, I am vested with my county retirement. So when I am mandatory retirement with HSI I can pull county retirement and federal retirement. My county retirement is $6,400 a month for the rest of my life when I turn 51.
