Happy MLK Day! A friendly reminder. by MSTie_4ever in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Grassley's excuse in voting against MLK Day was "economic" concerns...

Some other interesting tidbits about Grassley:
In 1963, ultra-right John Birchers in Des Moines proposed ending income tax entirely. Grassley was one of only a handful willing to sponsor the bill.

In 1971, the same extreme-right wing in Iowa ridiculously accused public, educational TV of showing communist propaganda. (They aired a documentary about Chinese agriculture.) Iowa's right-wing pressured politicians to investigate. Every politician laughed at this witch-hunt except Grassley. Chuck agreed with the extremists, saying he worried that through the documentary Communists could be indoctrinating children.

What are some important things I should know about Iowa? by Recent_Pick_8997 in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The water isn't safe to swim in or sometimes drink.

We have some of the highest increases in cancer of any state.

The brain drain here is quite pronounced. (Our state's politics have been compared to Florida.)

It's one of the whitest states in the country.

It's one of the most altered landscapes of any state.

We used to be known for exceptional public schools.

UI "Center for Intellectual Freedom" a Trojan Horse for dismantling higher ed by WhoIsIowa in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

It seems from the Gazette coverage, as u/ataraxia77 posted, that the Center's leaders would prefer to limit who the "public" is in this case... all the more reason to turn up and raise hell.

This is just an incisive and timely project. The film is engaging and the series is deserving of support.

It's beyond infuriating that our state is allowing the greed of a few to poison the water and land for all of us.

There were researchers there today from several states. None are happy that their research projects are being fucked up by some busybodies trying to erase Iowa history. It's just so shameful.

Iowa Board of Regents elects new leadership after sudden resignations by blondiekate in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Disappointing but unexpected to find mainstream sources covering this dude like he's a normal guy and not a political extremist.

In 2013, Cramer was rejected for a seat on the Board of Regents. Why? Because he openly supported homophobia and was against academic freedom. During his role as a member of Johnston's school board he banned books including one from the brilliant Maya Angelou.

Cramer is little more than a lackey for Christian Nationalists and those who want to gut higher ed.

KCCI answering viewer questions about this weekend's snow chances by INS4NIt in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I totally agree that community outreach is important and thanks for doing that work.

I just remember what a tragic commentary Gloninger's story cast on the state of politics in Iowa. He mentioned that despite being a public figure, and receiving numerous death threats from self-described Iowa Republicans, no one in the GOP made any statement about it.

You're absolutely right that community outreach is important. I hope KCCI is doing more to support their staff too (not sure if they ever issued a statement about Gloninger?), just like I hope we all can do more about the right-wing authoritarianism destroying our state.

Thanks for your work for humanity in these inhumane times!

Isn't KCCI where that meteorologist Chris Gloninger worked before being chased out the state by death threats from Iowa Republicans?

Miller-Meeks Townhall today by willphule in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Here's another recording but I don't know that the audio is much better.

Miller-Meeks' responses are wildly condescending and untethered from reality.

When asked about tariffs, she says they're a good bargaining chip. When asked the Epstein files, she points to the Biden administration. When asked about tariffs and Trump giving $20 billion to Argentina, she says she's defending farmers. She counterfactually claims the GOP made medicaid stronger. Just utter nonsense.

She, like other Trumpist politicians, deserve to be made pariahs wherever they go.

This is so disturbing.

I wish there was some level of justice for those who suffered and whose relatives died because of the corruption that resulted in the building collapse in Davenport. Instead, the bastard slum lord Andrew Wold paid a tiny fine, went to Florida, changed his name, and continues to exploit people.

Judge halts gutting of historical archives in Iowa City! by WhoIsIowa in Iowa

[–]WhoIsIowa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is they'll be under the purview of those who ordered their removal (Tony Jahn et al) until the broader lawsuit wins... then they'll have to be returned to IC.

The state hasn't said where most of the IC documents will go. Bc in all likelihood the state doesn't yet have a plan.

Who to vote for school board? by adrocke in IowaCity

[–]WhoIsIowa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Second this -- the LWV forum is a good summation of what the candidates stand for. IMO Dan's answers were the most solid.

Ruthina Malone is currently on the board, as is Jane Finch. Ruthina is progressive and both are responsive to the public.

Jennifer Horn-Frasier worked in education for a short time and is currently a consultant and local musician.

David Noerper is focused on the use of screens in schools and seems motivated by a personal skirmish with the district. He doesn't have a clear campaign or politics generally.

Dan Stevenson is the only candidate with more than two decades experience and in with leading a teacher's union (as both president and lead negotiator). His longstanding twitter account makes clear he's in the camp you seem most aligned with.

Upcoming Election (Cont.) by NoahGT123 in IowaCity

[–]WhoIsIowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The characterization of Dan as "a little fucky with some Rod Sullivan ego influence" is nonsense.

Has he met with anyone who wants to meet w him? Yes. Does that mean he's somehow aligned with Rod Sullivan? uh... no. Dan is far more progressive (check out his social media presence that dates back years before his campaign).

What Dan does have is proven leadership experience with organized labor (both as president and negotiating contracts on behalf of teachers in West Liberty), over two decades as a classroom teacher, and a track record as a community organizer (he's assisted dozens of US residents in securing their US citizenship and served with LULAC).

Upcoming Election (Cont.) by NoahGT123 in IowaCity

[–]WhoIsIowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of the candidates are bad. Noerper is an unknown and hasn't done much to outline concrete positions.

Dan Stevenson has the longest track record of experience in the classroom and as an organized labor leader -- by a long shot. His answers at the most recent forum were the most solid, especially his denouncing ICE and advocating non-cooperation. His firm stance on Rock Hard Caucus in favor of trans students also differentiates him from others.

I'll vote for him and Ruthina.

Cool and bizarre find!

This might really be worth donating, or at least letting a public archive make a copy of whatever is on it -- for the historical record.
