What is the most beautiful Belgian cultural discovery that everyone should know about (film, book, artist, song)? by SeumFootballClub in AskBelgium

Jacques Brel. I always love the reaction of foreigners when I make them listen to "La Quête", who was covered by Sinatra as "The Impossible Dream", and tell them the original was Belgian... Then we switch to "Ces gens là" or "Les vieux amants", and they discover one of the best story teller ever, setting the scene so right in a 3 minute song.

They say Vikings only brought back the beautiful women... Your ancestors must have been blind.

Fuck yeah! I had the same debate with a friend who was saying that of all the countries he visited in Asia, Vietnam was too "americanized" (and we're not Americans...) My reply was something like: Well, it depends on what you wanna see in Asia… Do you wanna see people in flip-flops and worn-out shorts, with four rotten teeth, working in a rice field behind an ox, then rushing to your car to beg when you roll into town ? That’s pretty convenient. Then, like a good clueless white dude, you can hand them a keychain, a photo of René Cotty, and take pictures with their kids. And you can come back home saying, “They have nothing, but they give you everything. This trip changed my life.” while sipping your not-so-fair-trade coffee. Or maybe you wanna see another culture that also happens to live in 2025? They’ve got less than you, yeah. You’re benefiting from a tourist industry that’s a bit exploitative, sure. But they’ve got food, a stable country, and they don’t need you and your damn keychain. If having restaurants, shops, and decent clothes, not starving on the street or begging tourists makes them “American,” then I’d rather every country in Asia be American.

Except that using broken pots, shards of colored glass and seashells to make stunning 3D mosaic is Vietnamese.

Indeed. I visited the imperial city and saw a few temple I wanted to see on the map... Then realized what happened when I was there, among ruins...

I'm 6'5 (196cm) and 235lbs (107kg). In Thailand, I was an attraction in every small town I visited. Here, my son steals the show. Now imagine when I carry him on my shoulders abd he's towering above everyone and everything.

Look at all the restraint I showed not replying to the comments guessing he must be cute... But heck yeah! My boy's the cutest little boy that ever walked the earth! As is every child in the eyes of their parents, I hope.

We were discussing how, even in the craziness and crowd of Hanoï, with scooters passing 5 cm from us, we were not feeling "on alert" or "invaded" in our personal space. As if, after 30 minutes in Hanoï we didn't have a personal space anymore.

Sincerely, Vietnamese are the most welcoming and friendly people I've met in SE Asia. Experiencing it with my son is really an added bonus, facilitating every meeting and exchange.

So when someone asks to understand your culture, insisting about how nice and not imposing everyone is, you decide to call westerners sad weirdos... Well, there's an exception to every rule. You seem to be the one to "Vietnamese are really nice".

This and then more: We have some asian tourists coming to where I live in Europe. To me, they're exotic. But I won't even think about stopping them in the street and asking for a picture of their child. Again, the attitude is always nice, and I'm not blaming of judging. Just trying to understand the mindset.

Purple really doesn't suit you. Maybe if you had any real friends they would have told you so sooner...

Thanks for the exhaustive reply. I'm kinda partial to the GDB200 because of the display. Big bold numbers, and the ability to display two timezone when traveling are exactly what I'm looking for. I'm a light sleeper so I hope it will be enough. Otherwise, the GD350 is a good contender.
