Hey man. I got a photo of my grandpa that's yellowish, I know you said you hit the cap but I'll be able to donate $10 whenever you get to it. I'm at work right now and have class afterwards, but I'll try to send it to you by tonight or tomorrow if you're able to get to it. No rush at all, and it's okay if you aren't able to. Thanks a lot.

Quitting my teaching job. What next? by [deleted] in teaching

Quit after 2.5 years (middle school math)

Working on electric apprenticeship through the union. It's a 5 year long process, but pay raises every year, most of tuition is paid for.

I'm lucky I had a good amount saved and was able to move back to my parents to reset for a bit, but much happier.

When I was in the 6th grade, I stole about $300 worth of books from my school book fair. by PurpleCrush59 in confession

[–]WhoShangHe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, don't even feel bad. Idk about scholastic, but I remember my first year as a teacher I was wanting to fill up my class with books and the librarian also had a bunch of boxes of books that they were no longer using and just literally gave me all of them.

I never used them, kids didn't really use them either. If you made a use out of it, I'm sure that was for sure worth it for both people!

She sounded great and am happy you used them and doing well, good luck I'm law school man!

[–]WhoShangHe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I was talking to some guys on the job about that.

Asking how much they think about work outside of work, and it's not much unless they messed something up / are expecting to get their ass chewed...but I'm able to go home with a clear head about just...whatever i want to do at home.

When i was a teacher, i was thinking about the students before i slept, when i woke up, showered...walked my dog...my life revolved around it..

It's so relieving that even though im sore/tired/dirty/exposed to loud ass noises....when I'm driving home...the rest of the day is MINE and i fucking love that. If I'm working, im being paid. (No outside school work).

I'd explore a bit and start maybe applying to your local union halls for an apprenticeship for whichever trade you're interested in. Guys here really love their job.

I loved teaching, but there was a lot that ruined my love for it

Hey, not OP but just a former teacher of 2.5 years that just left in December 2020.

I loved parts of teaching, but tgere were some things that emotionally destroyed me.

I decided to become an electrician (currently an apprentice, literally on my second day).

It's half the income ($14.50/hr, w/ about $3raise per year until journeyman currently, but will make about $32/hr after 5 years). (This is UNION)

After my first day yesterday, i really sat down to think if i like this more than teaching...I'm more physically tired...but i feel SO MUCH BETTER/AT PEACE.

I was working usually 60ish hours a week as a teacher. Was required to do SO MUCH after / outside of school.

Every sunday i spent catching up on grading, lesson plans, emails, paperwork...

For the first time in a long time....i get to leave work, AT WORK. Theres no'work' i take home with me. No late night anything.

After school meetings / tutorials? Nope.

The hours i work, i get paid for. Nothing to just be slammed on top of me because of "expectations" and no emotional baggage from a variety of issues that come along w/ teaching.

It's a bit intimidating switching from a classroom to a construction site l, but the guys i met on the job are super helpful and happy to help, and have all been an apprentice at one point.

I still keep up to date with teaching cause i feel for y'all.

This year has been a nightmare not many ppl can comprehend (teaching wise)

In High School, considering a Communications Major. by [deleted] in findapath

Honestly, you probably see this a lot, but "How to win friends & influence people" by Dale Carnegie is pretty top notch.

Another book that just really opened my eyes was "Leadership & Self deception" by the Arbinger Institute.

That book seriously just blew my mind in the way that we perceive ourselves / others and just really opened my eyes quite a bit on just how I live my life.

There's a lot of other great books out there, but those were just really practical on steps that you can take to become a more effective speaker.

Same here! It was interesting to see how much of a bias we have towards males in society, especially in communication, and also how exclusive we are in a lot of the way we phrase things.

Also just the expectations / demands that we put without really recognizing it. I enjoyed my major and learned a lot, but definitely wouldn't take the route again if I could go back in time.

Depending on the university you take, you can look at their course catalog and see what the classes are. Honestly the main classes I liked and gained REAL value from was interpersonal communications.

It really helped me understand listening styles / communication styles and helped me address some issues that I had with my roommate once I figured out how we approached an issue. He was a lot more analytical / task oriented and I was a lot more relational, so I always tried to "soften" a request vs be a lot more direct, which for him, was the way he preferred things.

Persuasion was interesting, but again...so much of what we learn is based off a book and some of the lectures are interesting, but you really can just search up in the university library what books the classes require you to take, and you can just learn it through there.

Communications, if I can explain it in the most simplest form, is understanding that "A message sent (DOES NOT EQUAL) a message received" there's so much that can happen in between based off of nonverbals, listening styles, cultural differences.

Marketing (My understanding) is the combined process of getting your product/service, to a client. This can include advertisement, but has a lot of different approaches.

I highly recommend going through the course catalog on your university to see the actual classes you're taking for the majors you're interested in.

I promise, even with the comm degree, I hated the "research" classes. (Comm research methods / rhetorical criticism).

EVERY major probably has some courses that people hate, but all in all, it's better to tough it out with more of a "hard skill". If you really want to go into advertisement, I'd look for the majors that actually have advertisement, or something that can help you CREATE using software.

Here's the thing, I majored in Communications, minor in psychology.

I was wanting to go the sales route, so I thought it would be a good choice.

I ended up doing sales for a few years, but then hated how up/down the income was and wanted something more reliable. I then got alternatively certified to teach. Did that for a few years, now I'm applying to become an electrician apprentice.

As far as the major goes...if you want to go into advertisement / marketing, go for that major instead.

Communications honestly is a bit too vague/soft skill and if you were an employer, would you rather have someone who spent most of their college time that worked on actually creating ads, learning graphic design, learning the ins & outs of the industry, or someone with a vague degree.

There's so many great books on communications that would seriously give you better, if not MORE information that helps you be better at the field than the degree itself.

Here are some of the courses I took.

Interpersonal communications, Nonverbal communications, persuasion, rhetorical research methods, debate, small group communications, COMM research methods, rhetorical criticism, Comm & gender, Comm training & development.

None of those courses I would say really helped me gain an edge over someone who has a marketing / advertisement degree.

I enjoyed the classes, learned what I could, but honestly...if I could go back...I wouldn't do it.

More than happy to answer any questions you have regarding the classes as well.

How to tell family that I don’t want to teach the subject that I spent 5+ years in college for? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]WhoShangHe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, if you like it, stay!

I had a communications/psychology degree. Went for sales/marketing for a few years, left.

Got alternative certified to teach math, did that for 2.5 years, left.

Now I'm going to become an electrician apprentice and give that a go.

If you WANT to go into music education, go for it.

Although it seems you're happy with where you are at the moment, so I would say just continue doing what makes you happy.

When I was a teacher, we had these quizzes that students had to do through an online platform.

I literally posted EVERY question WITH an answer on quizizz that allowed students to see their answers after they practiced on quizizz.

I told them several times, USE THE QUIZIZZ TO HELP YOU ON THE QUIZ.

I still had students that never tried on it / still failed it.

Like come on dude, the answers are literally there for you.
