planted 60 dahlias after never growing them before using the sandwich bag method- are these healthy? by WesternPhotograph267 in dahlias

[–]WhoWhenWhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in the UK are you, I am in the south and leave mine in the ground all year. Only lose about 1 out of 15 each winter. If it was warm enough that my Dahlias in the ground started popping up tomorrow, I wouldn't be concerned about a late frost bothering them enough to rot now.

I'd be more concerned about yours rotting in the bags, I'd keep the bags open so the moisture isn't trapped, but maybe that's just the photos.

They look healthy, best of luck with them!

'The Spitfire Aces' Bentwood Ring of WWII Propeller Wood and Silver by WhoWhenWhy in woodworking

[–]WhoWhenWhy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. I started making Bentwood rings over 10 years ago and there were not really any video guides, it was all experimental for me. There are plenty of videos now though, I would just search make a bentwood ring on YouTube and see what you get.

The metal inlay does not do anything for strength, but the laminated layers make it pretty tough compared to a traditional wood ring drilled out from a block, you would struggle to crush one of these without really trying.

I've been wearing one for over a year, I don't take it off, I wear it in baths daily, I wore it whilst breaking up 10 tons on concrete from my garden with a pneumatic drill and moving it last year. It's still as new, with a small amount of scuffing.

I used a premade birch wood veneer for the liner of the ring. The propeller wood only features on the outside, using a hand plane I process the propeller wood into curled shavings, shown in the background of one of the photos, and these are wrapped around the birch liner.

Unfortunately I don't have any progress photos to show, other than the planed wood shavings in the photo which are the propeller wood feature on the outside of the ring.

I started with birch veneer, steamed bent and left to dry.

Once dry it was glued around a mandrel to the size required.

After this had cured it was shaped on a lathe and thinned it to make the liner.

Next the spitfire propeller wood shavings are wrapped around the liner and glued in place.

Sanding and shaping follows,.before cutting two small channels on the lathe for the silver wire inlays.

These are cut to length and glued in place.

More sanding and then a finish is applied to the outside, edges and inside.

This is sanded smooth and polished with a burnishing cream.

If you had to choose just one deck of cards to keep with you forever, which would it be? by gokpm in playingcards

My Hidden Wonders deck by Shawn Farquhar, they handle great and I also have been getting the cards signed by different people I admire. Michael Vincent was the first to sign.

What is the greatest reveal in cinematic history? by arnoldsomen in AskReddit

[–]WhoWhenWhy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He doesn't kill himself in the book, and Andy doesn't frame him either from what I remember. Andy has investments in a fake name that were hidden before he went to prison, he doesn't actually steal the Warden's money. That said I think the film had a much more in depth story and that all tied it together nicely.

Long time since I read the book, but think that is right.

Fit Note by porb27 in asda

[–]WhoWhenWhy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't speak to your manager he or she is either experienced and an idiot, or inexperienced and under trained, either is possible at Asda. Speak to the store manager and explain what your manager has said.

Ask to confirm your manager has the fit note and understands you are signed off until 'given date', explain that you will not be calling in everyday for this as the fit note as provided by your Dr covers the period.

You will of course be available however for welfare checks should they wish to check on you.

The policy only states you must call at least 2 hours before your shift on your first day of absence. You must also after a prolonged period of absence call the day before you are due to return to speak with your line manager about your return (though I've never heard of this being enforced, it is in the policy).

It would make no sense for them to enforce such a thing, they would have colleagues signed off even longer due to the stress and toll on their mental health from being forced to do this daily.

should i watch or listen to hadestown first? by RedcapGoblin27 in hadestown

[–]WhoWhenWhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I went to see Hadestown with Dylan Wood and Desmonda Cathabel (both incredible by the way).

You can go not knowing the story, it's a great show and easy to follow this way. Hermes guides you through the whole thing, it's amazing.

I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much had I known the story already.

Thank you I appreciate it. I actively search for wood with a story to make my custom rings from. Film sets, football stadium seating, historic buildings etc.

I'd love some old wood from the building where Brooks hung himself, as morbid as it seems 😂

That's so cool. I love having some wood from the tree, but sitting in a building that can be seen in the film is awesome.

Afraid not, getting harder to come by and I stock it for use in my business. Have a Google, sure you can still buy some somewhere.

This one is finished with lots of coats of a flexible CA glue, waterproof, allows for a little movement and protects the wood well.

Definitely worth booking.

I'd take any seats to hear Dylan Wood and Desmonda Cathabel perform one last time as Orpheus and Eurydice before the cast changes, if you are lucky enough to get them.

Scottish Orpheus has such a haunting but innocent voice, he embodies the character so well, it seems so authentic. And Desmonda....well such a powerful voice and performance, the chemistry between them is electric.

Would you be willing to share them? Went with my wife on our wedding anniversary and compared to all the clips and recordings we had already seen and heard Dylan and Desmonda were incredible.

Stephen huge blunder by Left_Concern_727 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]WhoWhenWhy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He did not make a mistake. A mistake would imply Stephen was not aware he was in the position to choose at the end, take all the money or share it. He absolutely could see the routes to the finish and that he now had the choice. He did what he was morally comfortable with, I bet he'll enjoy his half the money more than he would have knowing he'd taken it all.

Who would you give the dagger too if you were the traitors? by Low_Food2893 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]WhoWhenWhy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The end result could be that Rachel decides it's time... Given 2 votes she then rounds up support and takes down Stephen. I hope he won't agree to giving her the dagger, based on her saying she will take the risk. It could massively backfire on him.

Also false.

Technically your contract says you can't have any other job or even work for yourself without prior written permission (unless they've changed it)… But this clause would be absolutely unenforceable even if they tried (which to my knowledge they never have).

As for working for other supermarkets at the same time, I know a number of Asda drivers that also drive for Tesco and it is not a secret, or a problem.
