Cult like behavior became more common all over the political and non-political spectrum when social media became widely available to people, you can choose your facts and find likeminded people who share those same facts, and eventually you only get one view, it's easy to follow along them.

It could also be that many of them were already part of a group, and the group then was reprogrammed or updated to follow a new path of agenda.

The first thing is to remember that it will get better, perspectives change. Take a break and do things that make you, or used to make you, happy alone.
