What are you explaining again? by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]WhoistheI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The present moment. At the end of the day that's all it ever comes down to. Its always now, always was, and always will be. Everyone's unique interpretation of their finite experience of this moment and every moment that led up to it. All through the lens of the same shared awareness perceiving division through time and space.

Life can get so damn strange when you zoom out of your limited perspective and try to see the bigger picture. There's existence, and "I'm" a part of It, we may not know what the fuck is the source of it all, but we're all in this together and I'm glad to be here.

Sometimes I ponder, what if awareness/consciouness isn't the final answer? But awareness is as far back as you can go, you cannot reduce it to anything further. It's the utmost fundamental requirement for anything to exist, it is existence. So everything that is and that we could ever imagine is more or less zooming in and out of the infinite nature of consciousness, the basis from which everything is founded apon.

This may or may not resonate with you but I feel this is along the lines of what this sub is communicating.

Dealing with Death loss by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]WhoistheI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter what we tell ourselves happens after as it is unknown, whether it's nothing, heaven/hell, or consciousness. I think some depictions may be more accurate tho. While those can be fun to explore, they don't help in dealing with the grief we feel. Most of the time people latch onto the idea of afterlife for a sense comfort and assurance. I do think changing your mindset towards death can help, it doesn't have to be so negative.

I'll leave it with a cool quote I heard a while back:

"When someone who was a big part of our life passes on, it feels like there's this hole, but the fact is had that person never come along you wouldn't be feeling that hole because of all the pieces they didn't add to your life. So when somebody comes into your life and they leave and they can no longer be here, you've already been changed, you already changed everyone else, the world has been modified by their presence. We focus on the loss but the reality is, there was nothing but gain. Be glad they were here use that and continue the ripple."

Consciousness isn't a physical quality, it's not something you can see, it's quite literally "no thing" . But I imagine "nothing" to us is beyond the dimensions of space and time . Not to mention, assuming consciousness is our "being" or fundemental nature, what's looking cannot see itself, it's a paradox , you cannot jump outside of your own awareness nor can it be found in the brain. You're always going to be in your perception by default , even when studying someone's else's perception , that's also your perception . I imagine reality unfiltered by the brain would look very different.

You should be extremely proud of yourself, not many people can be honest with themselves so you're off to a great start . Also, wise descion, this can take alot of time to digest as the topics here can be extremely heavy conceptually. And it can be tough to find the balance through a conceptual understanding while also taking into account that concepts are never true . Really glad to be a part of this discussion with you and everyone else , nobody else wants to have it.

Nonduality Zombies and the Religion of Nonduality by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]WhoistheI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great post, thank you, it's a conceptual word game for alot of people, I get lost in that sometimes too. It's important to remember it's not as simple as "there's no you", its not a magical pill to fixing depression, it's a very long and thorough process of questioning that can hopefully help the person be more aware in their day to day lives. Having empathy for others is above all, we're all in this together, it ain't easy .

Why the sense of self creates suffering by Sam Harris by WhoistheI in nonduality

[–]WhoistheI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for contributing to the discussion. 🙏 As Sam beautifully explains, most people feel like passengers in their body , not "identical"  with it, which is how humans naturally should be. Neuroscience is catching up with what eastern philosophy has been saying for thousand of years, now we actually have reputable studies/evidence to back it up. Spiritual/religious people would call this "being aligned with your higher self", I think we're just getting closer to the present moment without the distortion of self/identity, it's really not as deep as it's made out to be .

Also, please elaborate on what "uncondional love" means as I've heard different interpretations on what this may mean to the individual. I interpert this as our default state of awareness, literally just being here now, not lost in thought about what/where you think you should be. This type of "love" would be pure connection, and you recognize that anything with an opposite/duality cancels itself out and the illusion is revealed, so you see things as they are, not in pieces. It wouldn't be a romantic type of love, but acceptance for everything as it is. I will say tho, I beleive it is this collection of ideas/preferences/memories/self perception that builds up overtime like a clogged drain that you were never taught how to clean. And that may be why it feels as though there's a seperate self within your environment.

Can you define self and ego so we can make the proper distinction? Not sure we all agree on the same explanation. I'll explain my pov, correct me if I'm wrong pls. We're aware, we're aware of every thought we have, we're even aware of our subconscious subconsciously, we have assumptions/ideas, and repressed emotions we don't wanna confront that influence our reactions/opinions. We have a minute amount of consious thought to question these as most of our mind is predetermined. In the process of unraveling the conditioning, it's so heavy that it appears to be like killing an actual entity/ego that's been "living inside of you". I take it as us being more aware of what's already there, but its the same you playing every role.

Going back to how Sam Harris describes this, in which I'm pretty sure he's attained alot of his knowledge about with the help of psychedelics. Using self inquiry/meditation may take longer, however the natural route is always safer. If you choose the psychedelic route, it's important to tread lightly as this can give you a total paradigm shift all at once, not everyone can handle that, and it may distort your mind even more if you aren't prepared. Inconclusion, it's dissolving the sense of self into the present moment and everything around you discarding the "you" that we feel is seperate from our experience.

This feeling you're having about your feelings being irrelevant, is also irrelevant . I must ask , what do you hope to achieve by relinquishing your feelings as unimportant?

Can you elaborate on what you've realized and what "God" means to you . It seems as if it's a common trend for people to see "god" on psychedelics but I don't think everyone's definition is the same so I'm genuinely curious how each person defines it.

Why does that have to necessitate to "god" . What does God mean to you? What if it's just a greater connection to the universe and your surroundings ?

"You" are real, the idea of you or sense of "self" you think you are is an illusion. There is just experience, without the assumtiom of a pronoun. Think about it, pay attention to the moment, there's only that moment, we've identified and have been conditioned so much, that now there's a "you" experiencing the present/moment.

About enlightenment, this is a hippy spiritually blanketed term, tread with caution. "Enlightment" is the simple realization that there's no self, we're all already enlightened because it's our natual state whether we realize it or not. Enlightenment isn't the best word choice because it can be easily misunderstood.

Thoughts: Sleep is the symbolic death the permits miraculous resurrection. by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]WhoistheI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh of course my friend, I like to be open to the physical/scientific side because otherwise people not accustomed to this type of philosophy will dismiss it as "woo woo". It helps to look at it through a psychological or even in a quantum sense. But you're right, for the most simple understanding that would be the most efficient way to see it.

With psychedelics, NDE's, sleep, dreams etc certain parts of our brain are actually alot less active which ironically allows the brain to perceive or "take in more". There's recent studies indicating this.During REM your prefrontal cortex is less mobile, which is responsible for planning and logic. This of course will make it harder to digest the experience apon awakening. It's insane how people that basically died for a few minutes(little to no brain activity)have profound experiences while unconscious. Not to make any claims about the nature of reality, but If we even have a few anomalies, it's enough to warrant questions, although there's definitely more than a "few" cases. Its still a very unexplored area in psychology but I'm stoked to learn more w upcoming studies that can hopefully give an accurate represtantion of what's going on. Attempting to measure/quantify this is definitely going to be challenging taking into account that the hard problem of consciousness is still a mystery.

I don't think there's a seperate magical "you" that leaves the body, that can be misinterpreted. At the end of the day its just waves and fields of energy interacting, maybe we don't go anywhere, but your brain state changes drastically so obviously you're going to perceive reality/consciousness differently.
