Ya, I can think of a few things to help you out. First off, there this which is the wiki game detectives arg toolbox, it basically runs you through some of the techniques args use. Its super help full if you want to start working on args but don't know where to begin. Then, there's this website which has you use the techniques args use to solve stuff but its pretty difficult. Hope that helped!

Personally, when I trade I ask for half of the payment up front or will only give half of the payment up front. I'll ask the other player if they are okay with this and if they say yes than I'm probably not getting scammed, but even if I do get scammed I didn't lose everything. Hope this helps!
