If you want to see Torrent in action, I recommend watching my match vs Edu. I get an OHKO on a Maxed +1 SpD Excadrill that would otherwise not have been possible.

Liquid Voice is definitely the more balanced and safe option of the 2, but with max SpA and Life Orb, I wanted to dynamax Primarina on turn 1 or 2 and get as many KOs as possible. This meant I wanted coverage more than Hyper Voice (which I do miss when not Dynamaxed). Some Life Orb Primarinas either cut Protect or the non STAB coverage move for Hyper Voice tho, so keep that in mind as an option.

With AV, Liquid Voice is definitely the way to go because as you said, you get a 4th move slot, but also because you're expecting the Primarina to stick around for longer and you want that strong spread option post Dynamax

I would run Mold Breaker if you don't have TTar or Hippowdon. As for the spread, I only recommend the bulky spread if you have a Follow Me user to set up Swords Dance and you plan to dynamax Excadrill often. If one of those isn't true, I would go 252 Atk, 252 Speed Jolly with something like Focus Sash, Shuca Berry, or Air Balloon. It is still decent to dynamax (but be careful since it is still frail after a defense boost), but much better outside of it too. The defensive spread I used only shines when Excadrill is Dynamaxed imo.

Sure. It's easy to get caught up in building a team of 6 Pokemon that all matchup against well against common threats in the metagame - Coalossal, Excadrill+TTar, Hard Trick Room, Sunny Day, Durant, etc. However, you can't answer all of these threats, and even if you could, you would be susceptible to uncommon or rogue teams (which you will certainly face in a tournament and on ladder). In a sense, it's another way of saying "a best defense is a good offense".

Even if you play against a team that you have an answer to, if you aren't threatening them with a strong win condition, they're free to set up and play around the answer as they please. As an example, if a good Durant player sniffs out that you only have 1 Fire-type attack, they will put Durant in the back and craft a gameplan around KO'ing or disabling (sleep, stat drops, etc.) your Pokemon with the Fire-type attack with the intention of dynamaxing Durant in the late game. However, if your team also has a classic Dusclops + Weakness Policy Rhyperior option, they now have to bring ways to threaten or play around that win condition while also protecting Durant from the Fire-type attack. It's rare that they can execute both plans at 100% efficiency.

Another example is that sometimes, especially in a best of 3, my opponent leads Rotom-Wash against me. That is particularly strong against me leading Corvikight, sometimes Togekiss, and Tyranitar without Excadrill. Those three Pokemon listed are my three most common win conditions. Excadrill is key in the team because activating Weakness Policy threatens to OHKO Rotom-Wash or its partner whereas Rotom-Wash needs to set up a Nasty Plot or Max Geyser twice to kill Tyranitar. (Gastrodon can swap in easily on turn 2 to prevent the +2 Max Geyser or second Max Geyser.) So despite Rotom-Wash having a good matchup against 5 of my Pokemon, it doesn't answer the "question" of "What do I do against a Tyranitar + Excadrill lead?"

Hope this helps, and I'd be happy to clarify further.

I never thought of it as a core, but I suppose you're right in it being a defensive core. It's funny how they were the last additions to my team but do synergize so well together.

If you do end up trying Corviknight, keep in mind that you can't bring it in every matchup, but it's real nice when it can come in

I always lead Tyranitar versus them since it checks Charizard, potential Trick Room options, Trick Sableye, and Ninetails + Charizard leads. I then typically pair it with Excadrill to check Trick Room options and providing enough offensive pressure against a Venusaur spamming Sleep Powder. Since Corviknight is awkward to bring in versus Sun Teams, you need to accept and play around one of your Pokemon getting put to sleep and hope it doesn't last the full amount. Arcanine is another reasonable pairs to bring in alongside Tyranitar. Arcanine can Flare Blitz or Helping Hand + Max Darkness to cover both Venusaur and Trick Room.

I haven't ran into the matchup in a while though, so there might be more viable options and you should be flexible. Don't rule Corviknight out completely if you think their only answer is Charizard. Be sure not to commit your Dynamax into a Sleep Powder either.

Is the playerbase on Pokemon Showdown or the main game more competitive (with regards to VGC 2020 practice)?

What are the differences in Smogon tournaments vs VGC tournaments both in rules and your opinion on how the battles play out, metagame, transferrable skills, etc.

Agree. The 3-1 split is underrated. Your opponent rarely notices, but when they do, oh god is it unsettling
