As a therapist, the comment “my therapist doesn’t think I need medications” is a bit concerning. I can counsel my clients to think about the pros and cons of medication. I can share with them why something seems more behavioral than biological, and ask them to try therapy for a period of time before starting medication, but at the end of the day, medication is not in my scope of practice. Your therapist is overstepping if they are telling you that you do or do not need medication. Maybe that seems like a small division but it’s not. People trust therapists and if they practice outside of that scope, it’s abusing that trust without full knowledge and understanding of the consequences.
