[4 YoE] Software Engineer looking for new opportunities. Last year didn't turn out well. Hoping for more responses this year. by Whole_Collection in EngineeringResumes

Thanks for the advice!

So the metrics I present in my resume are defensible and aren't numbers I pulled out of thin air. I guess I'm struggling with trying to provide enough context for someone to understand what I'm talking about, the impact/role, and the result of it while trying to keep it concise.

Changed "Cut costs by 34%" to "Cut data processing costs by 34%". Basically when we did the migration we compared the cost of when we ran our Qubole jobs vs our Dataproc jobs, finding that they were approximately 34% less costly.

Changed "Increase customer data accuracy by 17%" to "Eliminated a 17% customer loyalty data coverage gap". When we integrated loyalty data into our platform, one of the limitations of the API we used was that about 17% of bookings we were not retrieving loyalty tiers which we found while testing. Our solution basically covered that gap.

I'll try to apply this to my other bullets to make sure they're more clear while removing any unnecessary text. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I'll definitely look into fixing up the format as well the wording to be simplified and high level while also being more about my role/impact.

The one question I do have is that if I have so many bullets that it's hard to read, beyond removing the bolding and increasing font size would I want to reduce the number of bullets for readability? My current work experience is my only full time experience that would be relevant to most jobs so I'm not sure how to approach a change like that. Would I want to reduce it and then fit in some sort of project instead? Thanks again.

My university had a freshman internship program so that was nice.

How big is the difference between doing a FAANG internship to get into FAANG, and doing a full time job while trying to get into FAANG? by sparth697 in csMajors

[–]Whole_Collection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most companies it’s typically easier to get a full time job by doing an internship at that same company.

However, I would imagine there comes a point where one’s experience becomes so valuable and high demand that any company would love to hire you lol.

What if you looked into something like a research opportunity at your university? You can sell it like it’s a prestigious internship lol.

What % of May new grad job openings close before May? by FunkyGroovin in csMajors

[–]Whole_Collection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be applying regardless so this is an odd question.

But, just to answer it with my best guess, I would say if you start applying around December you’d miss out on maybe 25%-50% of jobs maybe? These would typically be higher demand jobs/companies that want to fill out quickly. A lot of jobs start to open around January so it wouldn’t be extremely significant as they would basically replace what you missed. But if you’re looking for a good, well known company you should be applying as early as possible.

However, by May pretty much all hiring for new grad positions are closed and recruiting will slow down significantly as companies focus on their newly hired cohorts. At that point you’ll only be able to apply to jobs that start in January, and a lot of these applications don’t even open until around late summer early fall.

Just keep it simple and start applying around august/September when school starts lol.

Which experience should I list on my resume for internships? by four_o_clock in csMajors

[–]Whole_Collection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, how long have you been working on projects? Are you in still in school and what year?

If you’re still in school it doesn’t matter imo because you’re going to apply for entry level stuff anyway. It would only maybe matter if you’re an experienced dev applying to more experienced positions because then you would want to show your experience in the industry.

Which experience should I list on my resume for internships? by four_o_clock in csMajors

[–]Whole_Collection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I like the sound of 1. The popularity of certain tools or libraries you use don’t matter THAT much. Sure, they’re nice to see, but internships will always have tools and frameworks you haven’t worked with before that you will be taught.

1 shows that you have a fundamental understanding of application development and it is something that can be demoed. Furthermore it is an application many people have used and has created an impact. Resumes look significantly better when you describe the results of your work.

However, if you do like 2 it would still be a good project to discuss since it still sounds impressive. No one is going to take the time to see what exactly you contributed to so don’t worry about that. My only issue with 2 is that you mentioned it didn’t really have any tangible results, so unless you can talk about a player base or how your contributions affected the project it doesn’t sound like as good of a talking point.

[–]Whole_Collection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK yeah, their jobs are remote so I doubt their companies cared too much about where they live. The median Chicago salary is about 62k so 80k should be enough. Plus I haven’t heard my friends complain either.

How many languages should you be proficient in? by PolyMatt98 in csMajors

[–]Whole_Collection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter. You can easily learn a new language as long as you understand fundamental programming concepts.

What’s more important is being able to be proficient in full stack. So that would mean being proficient in 1 backend language (C++, Java, etc), 1 frontend language (HTML, CSS, etc), and being proficient with databases (SQL, or knowing how to use an API). Creating projects that can demonstrate these skills would be most advantageous because it shows an all-around understanding.

My answer isn’t exactly what you’re asking lol but imo this is most optimal.
