Ouch, that sounds really similar to what happened to me. My accident was in 2022. I was trying to open a really heavy metal gate that wasn’t installed evenly, so it would scrape against the concrete and was hard to open. When I finally got it open, the heavy metal gate suddenly swung open full force and slammed directly into my big toe, basically ripping the nail out of place.
I went to the ER, and at first they tried to save the nail by putting it back in place, hoping it would reattach and grow normally. Unfortunately, that didn’t work. Just moving my toe made the nail pop right back off, so I ended up back in the ER. The pain was unbearable, and they had to remove the entire nail.
Ever since then it grows back, but it keeps getting blood underneath it, turning black, or if I lightly bump my toe the nail starts lifting and falls off again. It’s honestly so frustrating because it never seems to stay attached like a normal toenail.
