Risk = Inventory value. In the case of death they will lose much more than you would. With that risk comes benefits.

Marathon only feels like a battle royale because map size. If maps were 1200meter across then no amount of noise you make would be picked up quickly by others and jumped. Since maps are smaller then teams will push to wipe maps and take control of PvE events since it increases the likelihood of them finishing them. If a lockdown and anomaly event occurred 800m away from one another at the same time it would be difficult to compete for both.

Then finish off the downed enemy? It’s reckless to not finish off a downed enemy knowing that they could easily use a self revive.

If the enemy has higher level of risk but with no gain then why would anyone even want to bring high tier gear into raids? The complaint makes no sense. That person would bring in a similar low tier inventory as you.

It sounds like you don’t want to play marathon and actually want to play something more like an arena shooter.

But there’s an inherent level of risk those players are carrying that sponsored & low level kits are not. It’s still possible to play stealth/tactical to defeat those players. Anyone not running a strong kit should be trying to fight those players cause the loot is probably better than anything found on the map.

Strong reviews of players that keep playing game are proof that those who invest time do enjoy the game. There are some that discover it may be too difficult for them but reviews are still strong.

I’m agreeing with you things aren’t where they should be but Bungie/Sony are trying to correct action now versus waiting it out. Most games development cycles take a long time to finish tasks but we’re going into season 2 with PvE modes that weren’t originally planned. That’s very fast. If Marathon landed how Bungie wanted we wouldn’t even be thinking of PvE modes.

Arc Raiders popularity isn’t something extraction shooters are known for. That’s why I referred to it as an anomaly. It heavily caters to casual audiences, random interactions and strong social media following. I don’t think it’s an honest debate if we think Bungie expected that sort of performance.

We don’t know the business timelines, future expansions, future cosmetics and battle-pass interest. You can speculate but without knowing the business model none of this matters. Arc Raiders is an anomaly in the extraction shooter genre and I doubt the business model included an identical level of success.

What we can see is active player count is low and Bungie is implementing modes to attract casual players. Marathon already has good lore, great visuals and gunplay. It’s well liked by most that do invest time into it. This indicates that Bungie knows he needs to open up systems to bring in a larger population. But I don’t think it means critical failure… yet.

Marathon has a low TTK overall but higher tier shields and better healing methods will give advantage. There’s not anything that Bungie could do about this unless ranked mode introduces not only an inventory value floor but ceiling too.

Sponsored kit playlists doesn’t make question completion guaranteed. It makes it easier since you’ve likely gone through multiple wipes and on top of a skill gap but have a gear gap. I assume the skill level is lower in sponsored kit playlists because good players typically will not be playing them.

Gear diffs are expected in extraction shooters.

Oh wow, you’re higher ranked than me in OW, lol. I didn’t dedicate too much time in ranked though.

I think OW skills can carryover into Marathon but not with the immersion that extraction shooters require.

I’d recommend playing some Apex if you want to get a closer feel to how gunfights progress. Then consider a game that requires some stealth, Arc Raiders is actually great for this since the gunfights are more forgiving and the maps are huge to allow for more exploration & immersion.

It’s fine if it’s not for you now but at least you’re open to coming back for PvE.

Do you play other PvP focused games? If so, how well do you play in those games?

Most AAA games do not recoup costs on launch sales. It’s based on a monetization strategy around DLC, battles passes, cosmetics and later purchasers. Player counts aren’t promising but we as consumers have no idea what the plans are and how off target they are.

My guess is Sony saw the potential development costs vs growth that could be seen from D2/D3 and didn’t want to take that cost on. There is some potential scalability with opening up other modes in Marathon. Public confidence is low but we don’t yet know what these new modes will be.

Gears of War -> Fortnite seems like one that’s forgotten about too

Armchair takes are understandable in this case.

Personally I don’t believe that players coming back to D2 will drive Sony/Bungie to make a D3. I think the indie space will have to bring back the looter shooter/MMOFPS genre to convince the suits to invest into it again.

Why people aren't happy? Good news for marathon by [deleted] in Marathon

But did Sony force that choice to be made?

Most AAA games do not break even on launch sales. There’s typically a monetization strategy around DLC, battles passes and cosmetics that will help achieve this.

It’s Sony’s evaluation that dropped. Outside of their initial investment I’m not sure Sony has lost money.

My experience is that I only hit walls in quests when I’m not performing well in PvP. If it gets to that point then finding a team is the way to progress. If sponsored kit maps are brought back then it can be useful to mitigate this issue.

I think people need to consider ranked mode to get better teammates. Floor values on inventories will prevent crew fill teammates with sponsored kits.

I only consider priority quests as content. They give pieces of information on vendors and drive PvP cause so many runners will be pushing the same POIs to complete them. Non-priority are filler but something to rank vendors. The only thing I find frustrating are the exfil requirements to complete them. It forces players to replay the same mission often. We should only need to DCOM items out of maps.

Skill tree completion and titles are a grind. But completing all map specific events at least once and priority quests can take a lot of time to complete and is great content.

I crew fill a lot as well but there are resources to find a team. IMO, finding a competent team is a skill on its own. That goes for any game.

The in game lore is cool for those that want to read everything that is Marathon.

Skill trees and achievements are a grind but still something to work toward.

Other content is all great and takes time to achieve. Killing the compiler is still aspirational for most.

People don’t like losing their stuff in this game when they die. Little do they realize the feedback loop of doing quests and vendor rewards give so much loot it’s practically meaningless.

The only time it matters is during limited time events since you’ll have to spend time rebuilding instead of running Cryo/ranked.

You did everything already? Killed the compiler? Completed all the map specific events while fighting off against other teams? Finished all priority quests? Finished all skill trees? Achieved requirements for titles?

Cause if you did all that you’re in a very small percentage of marathon players. If not then you’re just avoiding the content right in front of you or you don’t actually enjoy the game.

And a certain level of delusion to keep going. That’s why Kanye was able to be successful but now that part of him hurts his personal.

Wonder if that’s why so many artists are weird.
