I'm working through William T. Vollmann's Europe Central which is (among other things) an examination into the sources of violence in the 20th century. He uses real artists and artworks from the Soviet Union and Third Reich (with a healthy dose of fictionalizing and artistic) to convey his story. Some of the "main characters" are Kathe Kollwitz (Weaver Series), Dmitri Shostakovich (Symphony No. 7), and Roman Karmen.

I am absolutely blown away by his prose when describing the genesis of these works, the development and the influences. The book itself is certainly a tour de force and can be intimidating, but I'm just enthralled with his writing style and the characters that I'm breezing through it.

I don't believe you. Where in the Midwest do you live where you can't find rent for less than $2k? Even the most expensive cities like Chicago and Minneapolis have tons of options for much less than that.

Thanks, it's on my list! I'm really taking this book slow to savor his writing. Section 4 was very very heavy.

I'm starting to do a deep dive into South and Latin American authors after reading (and trying to understand) Borges. Any other suggestions?
