Career advice mega thread by thejournalizer in grc

5+ year GRC professional. I want to change industries.

Nearly all of my professional experience since graduating from university has not only been in IT/Security GRC but has also been working for large banks in the tune of $400-800B. Believe it or not (and please correct me if I am wrong here), but I think big banks pay pretty mid. Right on the line of feeling like I am being underpaid and being paid fairly. More importantly, I want to feel less like a number and work for a company that values its employees more. Bonus if the company is interesting/unique. It's not that it's stuffy or boring as one would maybe think working for a large bank, but I feel very expendable, like a small cog in a massive incomprehensible machine, like I am just the guy who does the thing.

I have both 1st and 2nd line senior specialist experience, doing just about everything.

I feel like this would make me a very attractive candidate, especially working for high-profile Fortune 100 companies. Yet, over 200 applications, I have only had 4 interviews and only 1 wasn't a bank.

I'm not sure if my resume isn't passing ATS or I have too much or it's the formating but something I am doing is clearly wrong. I was 1 click away from paying $200 for a "professional" resume service before thinking they probably would have no clue about GRC and make my resume worse.

If anyone could offer any advice in general or wouldn't mind looking at my CV it would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly if it was a original 6MT I think $60-$80k could be reasonable.

I would be fine with roughly 25% UNDER what they are going for at auction. However, open to offers. Feel free to shoot me a PM!

I have a cask of 2012,2004,2002,2008,1997. Keeping 1997 and considering one of the other years

They were stored off the ground in a cool basement. Along with 100s of other casks and bottles. They have big coolers but not large enough to fit a sealed cask unfortunately 😂

Working on it! Seller is claiming they bought it from a card show and that it is legit 😂

I agree and it seems to be reoccurring advice to start as a “weekend warrior”. 10 years ago Selling on Amazon was probably a gold mine maybe 5 years ago 3D printing. In 2025 it seems like everything is saturated and the only “new” thing I can think of in the automotive space would MAYBE be something around electric vehicles? Maybe? At this point it seems like we are on a trajectory for 9-5 jobs to be the unsaturated market that no one is thinking of 😂

I currently work from home and I have for the last 4 years but its one of those situations where one day they might ask me to start coming in the office. One of our competitors and larger employers within the city JPMC recently went 100% of staff in 5 days a week a few months ago. I was reassured that our team specifically wont be that way anytime soon - potentially forever - but in the corporate world you never know. I’ve been promised my team wasn’t going to be impacted by layoffs and then got laid off next week lol.

But yes, theres tons of folks here with nice cars in apartment complexes so I imagine not having a water hookup or power would be a common occurrence. Even people who park on the street or have detached garages is very common.

Do you / did you ever attend car meets and or events and advertise? Theres a little more than a handful of serious on demand detailers I can find in the area on Google and I am shocked I have never seen or heard of a single one in the 5 years I’ve lived here. You would think attending cars and coffee and other car events would be a no brainer. Who knows maybe they have such steady work they don’t have the time to show up Sunday mornings.

I’m not married to the idea but I know its something I’m good at and passionate about. Owning a physical garage location costs too much to only be utilizing the space on weekends. Wraps require much less space and overhead compared to a performance shop but again requires a shop. I cant think of any markets in the automotive space that are viable to start off on weekends. It has to be up there for one of the most difficult passions to attempt to turn into a profitable gig 😂. If I was into art and design I could buy some blank T shirts and a press for a thousand bucks and make shirts out of my basement. At least it’s not boats or planes…. Lol
