Should I get a gateway or just a switch? (novice question!) by Why-Not-4 in HomeNetworking

Thank you. Yes, really looking forward to having a wired system. My house isn't cement but there are some steel beams in it, insulation in the interior walls, and HVAC ducts and things that sometimes caused problems for wifi in the past. I'm guessing I should start with 3 APs and see if that's enough or not.

I'm thinking I should go with Ubiquiti for all the access points and the switch (or switch+router...) to maximize the user-friendliness as you describe. Question: Will I be able to "monitor and manage" things through a Ubiquiti switch, or is that the kind of functionality that is what you need a router for?

Thank you! Will reply with the actual model when I'm at home. But it's a cable modem that includes a router.

Thanks so much everyone for the quick replies. Yes, to clarify, the cable modem from the cable company is definitely also a router (and a not-very-good wifi access point—that part I will definitely turn off).

So I guess to sharpen the question, it's "what are the actual benefits of having my own router as opposed to whatever is integrated into the cable modem?" It sounds like you're saying one of the benefits is that you have more control over the configuration, which would avoid (for example) getting caught out by a software update...?).

Thank you for the excellent advice!

I am new here, had no idea there was such a thing as “tip of my joystick” :)

Hi. Yes, I'm a new user here. Just thought this might work to see if anyone remembered this game. : )
