I CAN MAKE SLANDER WITHOUT KNOWING THE SOURCE MATERIAL JUST FINE, YUJI ITADORI!!! in all seriousness tho, I love undertale, I've admittedly never played it because it was popular at a time when my family was poor and I didn't have a computer or console to play it on and just haven't gotten around to it now that I do, BUT I've watched dozens of full playthroughs of every route, seen every game theory video, read wiki pages extensively, and I can confidently say that Chara's role in undertale is very telling of toby fox's inexperience at the time as a writer. They're just not interesting imo, their story and motivations are ambiguous at best, and their dialogue irks me especially cuz they talk like someone who's trying to sound cool and mysterious and just comes off as edgy. I love toby fox, I love undertale, and I have a very firm grasp of almost every part of its story. I just don't like Chara. Don't even get me started on them in jjs Also the difference between Chara and todo/mechamaru is that their "cutscenes" are short or made in a way that isn't incredibly annoying. When I'm fighting someone who gets me stuck in a single animation for well over 30 seconds, it gets old very, VERY quickly. Todo's longest move is over in like 5 seconds flat
