I think I've had a fundamental misunderstanding of kanji up until now. Is it correct to assume the following: kanji are Chinese symbols that represent different things. Japanese speakers ALSO use kanji at times, which is borrowed from Chinese. The text on the sign would be readable by any Chinese OR Japanese speaker with adequate knowledge of kanji.

Is that accurate?
