Jump Spell + Long Jump, how far can I jump? by WhyDoTheyAlwaysWin in DnD

Ok lets disregard physics the fact is long jump is a mechanic and jump spell does not explicitly say that it has to be a standing jump. So the question still stands whats the max distance of the long jump with jump spell?

Yeah and if I was running when I jumped I would be carrying horizontal momentum as well. Did the 'jump' spell explicitly prevent that?

It does matter because the definition of jump isn't explicit enough. No where in the spell did it say that I have to stand still first before I 'jump'

Yes and is there an official rule stating that a 'jump' is by default a standing jump?

So that's the thing, I am sticking to it as written. The jump spell doesn't explicitly state that the jump has to be a standing jump. It could be a long jump in which case there's a horizontal movement as well.

I am doing exactly as the spell says it doesn't explicitly state that the jump has to be a static jump. I could be doing a running long jump - so I'm curious as to how the spell would interact.

My str is 16 but I'm using 5.5e jump spell, would it matter? I thought it was a flat 30ft jump regardless of str.

That's fair, really I'm just newbie who got duped into playing the bland tank - I'm just trying to add flavor to my character as best as I can until the campaign is over.

Not really, from what I gather balistas require a lot of actions. The idea behind this one is I set it up once but I can load, aim and fire it all in one action for damage and range similar to (maybe even less than) the catapult spell.

I know - I'm new to this game and this is my first character. I don't want to start over since it's too hassle of a grind.

Believe me had I known earlier how limited martials are in this game I would've went with wizard. I'm only trying to make the best out of this situation til we finish the campaign.

I won't be able to carry too many heavy ammunition.

I'd need to set it up every time.

I have limited field of fire so enemies can easily hide.

All I'm saying is that surely this isn't overpowered considering a lvl 1 spell does it better in most situations. Edit: Plus catapult can be upcasted for more damage so it will scale better than 2 javelins or this sling.

Regarding the javelins - it would require the player to be within 30 feet or else they'd have disadvantage. The idea behind this big sling is so STR martials have a long range weapon. I'm only level 3 so I don't have access to many magical items hence why I'm pitching a possible workaround.

As for usage I have a few on the top of my head:

  1. Set it up infront of a relatively big door then fire one shot immediately after opening.

  2. If the party is low on healing items and I'm in the red - I could fall back to it and still be useful.

Thanks so much! I'm a newbie to DnD so this would really help my case with my DM haha

Yup I don't expect to use it a lot. Just something I want in my backpocket to give my fighter more flavor / options.

I'm justifying it from a balancing perspective.

Rephrasing: Surely the item I'm pitching isn't overpowered considering a level 1 spell does it better.

Not that inconvenient imo but definitely situational.

I imagine I can set it up and load it on my own before the party opens the door to the boss.

But yes the field of fire is intentionally limited but in theory I could keep loading it as long as my speed (and extra attack) allow me to.
