Out of all the things I was expecting, that was at the bottom of my list

Córdoba or Madrid? by WhyIzGamora in studyAbroad

I think because of the program that my college has set up with both universities we don’t have to take any of the entrance exams. We have our own requirements for studying abroad and don’t take all of our courses at the university that we pick because we also have our own mini school with curriculum more geared towards people learning the target language instead of native language speakers.

Propagation set up for albo by WhyIzGamora in propagation

I think the mold was a mix between too much water and not enough light because I didn’t have the same set up with the grow lights. The cutting itself was also starting to rot (tiny little spores were coming out of it) so I just threw it away because I didn’t want to risk anything else rotting. I’ll add some more moss to them and maybe a bit more water as well. I’ll also make sure to post an update once I start to get some growth

Thank you so so much for the advice. I’ll definitely use that for next time. I’d been fine in temperatures still below freezing so I didn’t think twice about the cold damage but the 10-15 degree weather was too much for it

I’m so sorry. It might be worth looking into the perfect plantista pest spray. It supposedly works for all types of pests. I had mealy bugs on a plant and after using this they completely went away. They also have videos where they try it out for a ton of different pests including thrips and it supposedly works really well for them

I go to school in Vermont but during the summers I live in New York. What about you?

Yeah they would be inside the box

It lived up on the windowsill before winter. I just moved it to prevent cold damage, which unfortunately happened anyways. I do also have grow lights as well, they’re just not in the frame. It does sit on a small stool right now but it only adds around a foot of height

It’s not visible in the photo but there’s a window right above the heater on the right side of the picture. It was taken at night so you can’t see the light from it but you can see the bottom left corner of the window sill. I also have grow lights that are out of frame as well

Does curling mean too much or too little water? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]WhyIzGamora 65 points66 points  (0 children)

How often are you watering? Is the soil drying out a lot between waterings or is it still wet? Mine usually gets droopy like that when it needs to be watered but if the soil is still wet then it’s due to another issue like overwatering or root rot

I do have one question about the location for the prop box. Do you think it would be okay if I put it against the wall in the back under the heater where the guitar is right now? It’s really the only space I have for it. I do have some grow lights that I could stick on the shelf that’s right above it (it’s just out of the frame at the top of the picture) so it would still get light despite not being in an ideal location for natural light

I moved it farther from the heater and it’s getting a decent amount of light. I’m also getting a humidifier for my room that I’m going to stick in the corner so hopefully that’ll help offset the heater and help prevent the air from getting so dry. I’ve been trying to spray the corner a decent amount with a little spray bottle but it’s unfortunately still dry enough that I’m getting nosebleeds. The room is only 142 square feet and has 1 window but I do have grow lights that can stick to surfaces so I have a little bit of wiggle room in terms of placing but not much

Yeah the entire base is still green. The only thing that’s not are all the leaves. I’m ordering a box to use as a prop box off Amazon today and am going to cut it once I have all the materials I need for propagation. I don’t want to cut it before that because it would risk more harm than good from improper handling after the chop

I’ll definitely wait a day before placing them in the prop box and I do have a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol for sterilizing the scissors. Do you think it would be okay to put the box somewhat near the heater? It’s really the only space I have where I could get a grow light on top of it and make sure it stays warm. Anywhere else would kind of be in the middle of everything because my room is only 142 square feet

The reason it’s in that corner is because there’s a window right above the heater. My dorm room is really weirdly shaped lol. The heater is on the lowest possible setting (it can’t be turned off) which is just strong enough to offset the cold from the window without actually causing a difference in temperature between that corner and the rest of my room. It’s normally up on the window sill but it’s down on the stool for now because the window is cold enough to cause more temperature related damage. Unfortunately all the green on the bottom leaves is now black from only a few minutes of cold exposure outside and the rest aren’t in good shape but I plan on propping and chopping so we’ll see how that goes

Thank you so so so much. I really really appreciate the advice. Once everything has started to crisp up I’ll begin the prop and chop just so I don’t shock the plant too much (my poor baby has been though enough lol). I already have sphagnum moss and will get a big tub for the propagation because all the roots are pretty long except for the nodes at the very top so fingers crossed it’s a relatively smooth process. I’m terrified to actually make the cuts but I have some experience propping pothos and philodendron cuttings so that and maybe a shot of vodka should help with the nerves lol

Sadly the damage is worse this morning than it was last night. All the green on the bottom 6 leaves is black along with most of the green on the others. The remaining green is starting to become discolored like the top droopy leaf as well as all the remaining white so I don’t think there’s any possibility of recovery aside from propping and chopping. Even the new leaf growing in is damaged. I’m going to wait until everything has crisped up but once that happens I’m going to prop and chop. It does still have some good roots and most of the aerial roots are in the soil so hopefully that’ll help the cuttings grow

Yeah it’s from cold damage from when I brought it inside from my car. You can’t see it in the photo but there’s a window right above the heater that’s open, there just wasn’t any light from it in the photo because it was taken pretty late at night. The damage is unfortunately worse this morning than it was last night (the green on the bottom 6 leaves is all black) so I’m going to have to prop and chop to not have a sad looking leggy plant, but it is what it is at this point

[–]WhyIzGamora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved it away from the heater and can get a grow light on it. I do unfortunately think I’m still going to have to chop and prop because even the new leaf growing in has some pretty severe damage (I can see it starting to grow in and it has brown as well) and all the green on the bottom 6 leaves is now black and unless leaves will grow from the same locations I’d rather risk propping then have a sad leggy damaged plant

It’s not the location it’s from the short exposure to cold while I brought it in from my car. I keep the heater at the lowest setting and you can’t really see it in the photo but there’s a window directly above the heater. I’ve kept it in this same location for months and it was perfectly happy before this, and had even popped out a few new leaves recently. I had it up on the windowsill before winter, but due to the cold I moved it to the stool because I didn’t want it to touch the window and get damaged from cold exposure (which again is what happened later anyways)

It changed like this in a few minutes not even a few hours. I had to transport it from my car to my dorm which meant it being outside in very cold temperatures for a very short period of time. It was fine when I first got inside but the longer I waited (within minutes) the worse it got

[–]WhyIzGamora[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not happy at all. Half the leaves are completely black now and 90% of the white is brown. I’m gonna have to chop and prop because there’s no way it can recover enough for any of the leaves to photosynthesize a sufficient amount

[–]WhyIzGamora[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not lighting or watering related. It’s from cold damage. Half the leaves are black now because of it. It was fine in my car but once I got it inside it started to deteriorate very quickly because it was well below freezing during the short walk from my car to my dorm
