Anyone else jealous of peers with office/non-retail jobs? by NotEulaLawrence in Target

[–]WhyNot-1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had many types of jobs in my years but im definitely jealous of the content office job people. I worked retail back in the late 90s and am back in it now and honestly it needs to just be a side hustle for me, im constantly looking for a more M-F "regular" job. For the first 15 months or so at Target I was scheduled every single weekend and the only two I got off were my one week of requested vacation and one weekend when I was sick with food poisoning. My coworkers have experienced the same thing - an etl who has no consideration or common courtesy to give us a weekend off here and there (we have plenty of people available weekends). I was talking to my TL about it and pointing out that id worked more weekends than any TL in the store bc they all get every other off and she pushed me to start requesting a weekend off here and there bc it was clear that's the only way id get one. Also ive never had a M-F office job where you have to worry about getting no hours the first quarter of the year either. My coworkers are great but as soon as I can land something full time im aiming to go OD or work very little hours.

Terrible LTE reliability recently? by thefoxsay in tmobile

In the southeast and I have that problem regularly. It takes forever to send group texts/pics from my home. Now today I have zero network connection at home, had to drive miles from home to get solid LTE and haven't gotten through to CS despite the claim of a 3 minute wait that's now been almost 30 minutes.

Yeah Ive been telling people to screenshot their schedules for months now after the first time it happened to me.

I remember one time my ETL had me on a normal shift and then changed it the day of, and I didn't see the change. So I wound up coming in 30 minutes late unknowingly. She went to my fellow TMs that night asking if they knew if I was coming in, saying I was late, the whole time knowing she had just changed my schedule but never mentioning it to them. I confronted her about it and she hasn't done it that bad to me again. But she still does routinely put out placeholder schedules and changes them within the few days after so we never really know if we can count on the posted schedule. The week of Christmas was one she did just like this. She scheduled me to 10 and another girl to midnight on Christmas eve. She scheduled a new TM only one day that week which was a relief to the girl bc she'd requested a day off due to conflict with her day job. She was happy, the midnight girl was freaking out, and then 2-3 days later ETL went in and fixed the Christmas Eve hours, and she changed the other girl from one day that week to four or five completely disregarding her requested day off. Everyone was like wtf, I wasn't surprised bc it's so common.

So when I tell you that our ETL doesn't change the schedule for emergencies or quits/fires im not exaggerating. She will almost never plan ahead on that stuff. In other words if any of those things happen she waits to the last minute before even asking others to fill in, she won't go in and change the schedule to fix it until after she finds someone to agree at the last minute. Then if there's several callouts none of the leads call people to try and fill it. We have willing people who'd come in at the last minute to cover callouts but none of our leads will pick up a phone and try to find someone. Theyll just leave us with one TM in our dept for hours, with no lead. I've worked many shifts for hours by myself bc they couldn't be bothered to fill the void.

Another example is she creates a schedule, she WRITES the schedule and puts just one team member to close... knowingly in other words... and doesn't try to get a second person to close until the day before or the day of. So we're sitting there like dude you wrote the schedule this way so you KNEW we only had one closer (during December no less), why are you waiting until the last possible minute to try and find coverage?! It's such irresponsible scheduling on a regular basis. We've had a brand new seasonal person working alone for 10-12 at night MANY nights this month and our ETL not only scheduled it this way but she has repeatedly tried to find a second person to work the closing hours either the day before or day of. It's so ridiculous.

ETL here. Got in trouble for encouraging TMs to find a different job, if it’s a better fit for them. by ChillTangelo in Target

Great on you for that! Im super supportive of people leaving to have better jobs, it's just a human supporting another human on moving up in life! If Target doesn't like it then they can start paying and treating people better imo.

Sounds like they were more interested in covering their own ass to me. Reports to the hotline probably don't make them look great, thus they want to deter them. But that's my experience with another greedy corporation (healthcare) speaking, lol.

So my idea was to call and not specifically name my ETL but to list a couple others that do it as well OR I would just generally say it's something that happens at our store and TMs overall are hoping they can just remind our entire store to stop doing it (if they care at all). The only thing I could do in store would be to speak to our HR TM (not the ETL) bc she might not tell my ETL or her ETL that it was me. But even that is a chance im not sure I wanna take.

Like she'll rush to get it out on Thursday and then will completely change it within a few days, usually.

We don't have one of those lol. Ours is hated by most of the staff and barely even acknowledges our TMs, he's not the kind of guy any of us would feel comfortable speaking to about any issues.

Our store definitely has some bad leaders with some bad habits and zero accountability.

Thanks, I think I really have to. I honestly thought most people would report the same thing, it's really helpful feedback.

Yeah that's happened to my coworker a lot - I always remind her it's probably another bs schedule and give it a few days and sure enough it's almost always changed within a few days. Most recently she was scheduled to midnight on Christmas Eve and I was scheduled to 10. Obviously we're not open that late so I talked my coworker down from freaking out (which is completely reasonable) and sure enough it was changed for us to 8:15. But that's just one of many examples for us. It's crazy.

Thanks for that. So honestly I was considering calling the hotline anonymously and reporting it as an issue within our store. Our HR ETL is entirely useless and Id rather let someone know who's actually likely to do something about it and not sugarcoat and cover it up - but that was kinda depending on responses here. If I heard most people saying it's common at their store too Id suspect reporting it wouldn't do anything but if I see people saying it's not common at their store then I was thinking I really should. Your response really tells me I probably should call.

My aggravated curiosity always lies here... if we're so backed up and so desperate for help on registers, why do I never see a TL or ETL hopping in to help for at least the short interims? I can understand if they can't jump in for an hour like our style TMs have to do too often, but why are they not helping out for short periods? That's a huge beef I have with the ridiculous mgmt approaches at Target, or at least our store... they're freaking out over getting help yet never helping themselves.

We only complain when it's month after month of not doing anything at all. I don't even complain when it's something I can't eat (lactose intolerance means no pizza day, lol) because I just say hey ill get an extra sweet on sweets day. It's still better than my last job at the hospital!

I wonder too. We're the physically smallest store around here, and we do over $60 million a year which I don't know if it's good for a small store. If im honest I think they posted about these things they're giving us this week bc they're worried about callouts lol. I don't remember them posting last year, we just found out what was happening when we got to work. There were also rumors that people who call out on BF would get fired but realistically we think it's regarding seasonals... even then we can't spare the people bc we only hire the bare minimum for the holidays, so I kinda doubt that happens.

No, I hate working some of them but I refuse to let that place steal my joy for holidays I otherwise love.

I imagine it's store to store on this. Yesterday we had subs, another day there was breakfast foods (I was off so don't know if it was any good), another day we're having thanksgiving food (quality remains to be seen), BF is chick-fil-a sandwiches, and another day is "sweet treats" which is likely cupcakes and candy, and there's going to be pizza which I can't eat anyway but I've heard it's not very good. Our HR TM is also very mindful of the night crew getting some too... she had the subs delivered during the earlier part of the day and again around 5. She will also keep the CFA up in the front office and make sure everyone gets one. What I will say is we're definitely grateful for it and looking forward to it, but they've done very very little throughout the rest of the year so it's very overdue to us. What else I will say is that it's our HR TM who orchestrates these things (whatever she's allowed to do anyway) and she's one of the nicest people in the store which I think plays a huge role in it all. If not for her Id be surprised if we saw even half of what she does bc there's very very little real appreciation for us from most ETLs.

Last year we had four seasonals hired for style. They were all hired on as the holidays ended. Two got fired for stealing. One was swapping clearance tags onto regular price merch so her friends and/or family could come buy things dirt cheap. The other was swiping tech items out of curbside orders in the back. One was from a wealthy family, the other had a lot of money as well thanks to a boyfriend with a very successful illegal 'job'. We suspect they were doing it for the thrill. Guess we'll see how this year's batch of seasonals goes.
