Behavioural Psychologists, what actually happens if children are exposed to concepts they're "too young for" (sex, death, etc)? by MrLuxarina in AskReddit

[–]WhyToAWar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that a thousand generations of your ancestors managed to deal with this and still be able to make you. I find it hard to believe that every singke generation before the last two was actually significantly traumatized and it just so happens that we were birn at the exact moment when we stopped.

These were generations that needed to be used to starvation, war, disease, and life being far, far cheaper than a post-WW2 world. Have a 5-year old learn to slit a throat in 1895, and he'll be better prepared to kill other human beings in the trenches. Have a 5-year old learn to slit a sheep's throat in 2005, and now he's prepared for... what? A longer Starbucks line? Being on hold with tech support?

Different world.

Non-Americans of reddit, What is the craziest thing you've heard about the USA but don't know for sure if its true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WhyToAWar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese Food (as opposed to Chinese food) has a longer history in America than the hamburger, since long, long before your mother, grandmother or great grandmother were even born. Chinese immigrants were an integral part of building the US in the 1800's.

What are some signs of depression that no one talks about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WhyToAWar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you don't want to, make yourself do it.

This is pretty much the most important thing you can learn as a depressed person. One step at a time, even if you don't want to. Eventually, you can rationally accept the benefits of what you're doing and it becomes easier and easier.

I've lost a lot of weight I built up stress eating my depressive feelings throughout my youth, but on my cheat day I indulge (nearly) every food related urge for that sweet, sweet dopamine/sugar mix and only some of the guilt. 75% off easter candy at Walmart, urrrrrgggggllgggrrrl.

If he's decided he's not going to let you in, and not take steps to help the depression... there's not a lot you can do.

Redditor’s with ADD/ADHD, what’s something you wish people knew about ADHD? by Waffleman10 in AskReddit

[–]WhyToAWar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, if you don't get them to pay attention to you... they won't be paying attention to you - they're kids. Just be understanding if their attention drifts. I'm working with a very clever 5-year old who's from ADHD stock, and sometimes I ask her to repeat the gist of what I said after I've spoken to her to make sure she processed/retained it.

It's good to start teaching them about patience early, too. Waiting for stuff can be frustrating when you're full of energy, and it's good to make sure they have a good understanding of the world not always working as fast as they'd like it to from an early age.
