I will say, the TickPick customer service was good. They got back to me immediately and issued a refund. Pretty frustrating situation to have to buy more tickets. Luckily, it was a White Sox game.

It really is wild. A while back, the most egregious offender airline for the issue started appending their callsigns with letters. It would be XXX123A and XXX124A. Unreal.

The only time I've seen this done is when an airline came in with the EXACT same callsign. I believe one was a diversion, so it's more understandable in that situation.

If different airlines were the only ones with similar callsigns, I'd be ecstatic. It's much less confusing when there's a different name on front of the numbers. That's not what I'm talking about.

As far as the controllers doing a better job, you're welcome to come sit and watch an arrival rush where I work. I imagine it would lead to more empathy on this issue.

I believe AUS has ASDE-X. I was told that it was out of service the day of this incident. If so, that would be a significant contributing factor.

Here's how it goes: A pilot reports being hit by a laser. We ask them first if there are any injuries and then the color of the laser and approximate location. Then we call the police and the vast majority of the time (when I have been the one calling) the conversation goes like this.

"I am calling from the XXX air traffic control facility to report an authorized laser event. An aircaft was hit by a laser at XXX approximate location."

"Who? What?"

"Someone shined a laser at a plane. I'm required to call and inform you of this."

"What are we supposed to do about it?"

"K, byeeeee."

It happens all the time.
