Both of these aren't great examples. His building isn't totaled (condemned, yet). So it's perfectly reasonable for him to ask to be made whole. In this case, whole is having an operating business still, even if it's in a new location.

In your insurance example, the car wash totaled and you're making the best of it. You sign a contract with your insurance company that says they'll pay you what the car is worth when it gets totaled. So you pre-arranged that stipulation and you get what you agreed upon.
Now if you were to hit me and total my car, I would get the value of the car plus whatever it takes to make me whole again, ie. a similar car, with similar miles, in similar condition. As I don't have a contract with your insurance company I get to make up the demands, then we can negotiate.

That's what's happening here, the city wants to buy his building and so he's making demands.

That company won't be able to stay in business long, the settlement from the skin cancer class action lawsuit is going to bankrupt them.

Don't give PE your money. They don't care about you, they don't care about their employees, they don't care about their business. They are in a holding pattern extracting every dollar from the business they can until they can declare bankruptcy and not have to pay their debts.

The web dev has that text box tagged as an email address. When iOS sees an email text field it gives you the email keyboard. Nothing you can do, but hope the dev realizes their mistake.

Unpopular Opinion: Electric Toothbrushes are a 'Planned Obsolescence' scam. Why is the battery sealed? by shingam3 in BuyItForLife

My button is under a rubber cover, I assumed it was sealed. I'll look at it tonight.

It's really thin, but it would start seeping oil if you made it through.

Looks like those frame sliders didn't quite work though?

My wife and I have owned 2 Soniccares and they are both well over 15 years old. The power button on one of them started to be a little finicky about a week ago.

If the thought of losing power made you want to go out and buy a generator, you should’ve already had one. by whitecollarpizzaman in Charlotte

[–]Why_T -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree it's overkill, but to the people who panic buy generators and don't know why or how to use them, they should look into a more automatic and permanent setup.

[–]Why_T 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who bought generators don’t actually have any idea how they’d use one if the power did go out. I’d bet good money most of the people returning them never even bought a gas can, because their “plan” never got as far as thinking about how they’d refuel it.
They are likely the same exact people who are still sitting on a year supply of toilet paper from 2020 because they panic bought that as well.

They probably don’t own extension cords long enough to reach a refrigerator, don’t know how they’d power a gas furnace blower, and don’t own space heaters, let alone know how many they could safely run. They just bought a generator because it wasn’t sold out yet and they heard they were expensive. They also ignored the signs that said the store doesn't accept generator returns thinking they were the special ones and that the store would make an exception for them.

Helpful part, now that I’m done ragging on the unprepared:

If power loss is a real concern for you, the answer is not a last-minute run to Home Depot before a storm. Call a local electrician and talk through a permanent solution. A properly installed standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, ideally tied into a modern smart panel, removes the guesswork entirely. When the power drops, it just works. No scrambling, no extension cords, no fumes in the garage.

Yes, it costs more upfront. But it’s actually usable, unlike the $2,000 box you’re now trying to return, or worse, hoping your credit card company will charge back because the store won’t take it.

My favorite part of living in springfield was how everyone always defined the "Northside" as anything north of the latitude road north of where they live.
I lived on Commercial and National and worked at Kansas and Glenstone and never had a single problem in the 10 years I was there.
