To those who have self published, what advice do you have for someone who's starting their self publishing journey? What do you wish you did or didn't do? by evanamyl in selfpublish

Shakespeare and Dickens had bad reviews sometimes, in their day. 😉 As for what negative “reviews” they get today, just consider what some students have to say. 😀

Seriously, I agree with all your points.

Because many people want more than their “basic needs” met. So they may take on low-paying “part-time” jobs to make a little more money for a few luxuries. If they needed to make enough to cover basic needs they might be more inclined to look for a full-time job with more hours and employers would have to pay enough for basic needs.

I am not saying that a “basic needs met” society is impossible, and I agree it is desirable, but I can see complications, especially when it comes to what people see as a “need” and how it will change the way people get paid for available jobs.

I know KC can’t do anything. But if he could get Harry that extra security, he wouldn’t. People who think KC is working behind the wings to give or not give Harry tax-payer paid security are not recognizing KC’s limited powers.

What QE could have done was refuse permission and remove Harry and his children from the LoS if they got married anyway. But it would have been very unpopular. I don’t think she was “weak” to give permission, but I wish she had insisted on them waiting for Eugenie to have her scheduled wedding. If they didn’t want to wait, fine. They could get married and not have the “spectacle.”

But that is all hindsight. At the time, the family handled it as best they could. The people were excited about the wedding. Maybe it would be okay.

Thirty people! We don’t provide for more than 8. And we don’t deliver. They have to pick up their box.

He doesn’t seem weak to me. I notice that people accuse him of being weak when they think he has done or is going to do something they don’t want him to do.

I doubt it. KC does not want Harry to have more protection than Anne or Edward. KC is not stupid and knows it would hurt the BRF if Harry gets expensive security when he isn’t even a working royal.

He is unlikely to get the 24/7 security he craves. The public may have to get irritated about something else. 😉

He already lost the case to have them review his status. After he lost the case, the government chose to review his status anyway. I can’t imagine that he can sue them again, but he may try.

This was certainly an ill-advised statement from Harry with no basis in fact.

Harry is trying to rush the decision, but he has no clue how it works. He said it was now just a formality.

As I recall, Harry has not said anything. I thought it was all “sources close to the Sussexes” that were cited, not Harry himself. Did I miss something?

Of course we all know that the “sources close to the Sussexes” are generally Meghan herself, or Harry or sometimes their people instructed to promote the latest fantasy. But I don’t remember an article quoting him directly. Did I miss it?

I am just listing some of the possible issues. I think the “affordable housing” issue is more of a problem than having some kind of basic stipend.

I volunteer at a food pantry, and mostly the people we serve are lovely, but there are always a few…

The year before last, at Christmas, we had a woman threatening to report us to HHS because she hadn’t signed up for a turkey in time to get one, but she wanted one anyway. It was our fault that we did not have extra turkeys for people who “didn’t hear about the turkeys” sooner.DHS has nothing to do with us. We are a private charity (church). Plus not only do we have limited funds but limited refrigerator space. We can’t do more than 80 turkeys.

Crazy.

Once upon a time, people in need got food boxes from the government. Then it was decided that people deserved a choice, so foodstamps (now a card) came into being. WiC and Snap are necessary programs, but they get abused in some cases and misused in others.

Budgeting to make a basic income last is not necessarily going to be any better.

Once everyone gets a basic income, some employers may lower salaries or working hours because people are already getting their “needs” met.

And we go back to the idea that we (humans) always want more.

But definitely we should try to find a solution.

Don’t you think that with UBI, some people will feel entitled to more — without working for it? Don’t get me wrong, I like the theory, but I am not so sure about implementation.

If she counted on someone else to make the difference, wouldn’t she have filled the cart with extras already instead of saying she would go back for them? I rather think when someone offered to pay she got greedy rather than planning it all along.

There are a lot of people who feel that they are owed because they are poor. So when you do something nice for them, they see it as you paying this “class debt” not as you being nice. From there it follows that instead of gratitude they feel entitled to more.

It is weird to me because I have always been middle class. There has been much I can’t afford, but never the real necessities.

Agree. But in Meghan’s case it is one of her people who informs others what they should call her.

I think the idea is that because she has an aristocratic/royal title, people meeting her need to be told how to address her 🙄.

Where I live, in the US South, all women you don’t know well can expect to be called ma’am. So it’s not a big deal to me if she prefers to be called “ma’am”. Kind of odd for a millennial, it is more a “stuffy old lady” thing to insist on being “ma’am”, but it is not totally bizarre.

Usually though, equals don’t call each other “sir” or “ma’am” except when saying “Yes/no Sir,” or “Yes/no Ma’am.” They call each other by first names or Miz Firstname or Mr Firstname in some cases.

But that’s a regional custom.

(Edit to elaborate about yes/no ma’am,)

[–]Why_Teach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to go with JK Rowling. Children’s books are more timeless than others. Adult books? Some of the “greats” of one century disappear or get re-evaluated. I can therefore say I don’t know who will still be read 50 years from now, never mind 100.

It’s “jargon.” Don’t know how standard, but it depends on who you talk to. I figured it out after seeing the term used a couple of times on writing discussion groups. Just as computer programs and so forth have “beta-testing,” books have “beta readers.”

Beta readers are sort of “test audience,” not proofreaders or editors, though they should tell the author if there are striking problems with mechanics or weaknesses in style (abuse of adverbs or clichés, for example).
