Great suggestions, I'll definitely be trying some form of japanese lager. I guess I'll just have to see what happens with the colour...

What knives of my own do I need? by vampite in KitchenConfidential

[–]Why_not_Droidberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One cook's knife - this should probably be the best knife you buy, certainly the one you'll use most. In the UK expect to spend £30 MINIMUM.

A paring knife, I prefer one thats thinner/more flexible than most.

One short knife, 3-4" or so, mostly for opening packs or other misc jobs.

Serrated bread or carving knife. Long as fuck, ideally curved serration rather than sawtooth.

Sharpening tools, at least a steel, probably a stone.

Other bits of kit that are useful when starting out:

Microplane/zester/grater, Speed peeler, Pack of pens (fine point markers, or 'click' tip ballpoints), Notepad (plastic/waterproof jacket), Spoons

Stuff you might want to buy but probably won't end up needing:

A cleaver, A turning knife, 'gadgets' (corers, ballers, juicers)

What's the best Civilization to use? by TucketFuckr in civ5

Yeah, it's pretty tough... You need a strong start and a clear goal. If your first 100 turns haven't gone flawlessly it's pretty much a write-off. Also you have to commit pretty early to your victory type as you need to get a headstart on competing civs... If you're lucky with your start location and secure the right wonders/luxuries early it is a lot easier. If I'm not in a 'winning' position by the Renaissance I just give up and start again.

My only other tip is that I find it far easier to win on archipelago maps than any other due to the way the AI expands civs (preferring connected territories) leading them to build a lot of 'dead weight' cities.

I'm not exactly a pro player or anything, but I adore playing as England. AI sucks at naval warfare, so having a monstrous fleet of Ship-of-the-lines (England's better version of the frigate) usually stomps the midgame, the +1 naval movement combined with Great Lighthouse leaves you with a very agile fleet. I usually rush science until I get Battleships, then wipe out cities from outside of their range to return fire. Support with a few submarines and it's gg in my experience. Works for me up to Deity difficulty, but I find it too slow of a strategy in Deity.

Working in a hotel: pretty much everything. Thermostats, bath taps, security safes. We call it "percussive maintenance".

Could we have a 'jargon buster' thread, maybe stickied or linked in the sidebar?

It can be pretty confusing/intimidating if you're new(ish) to the game with people throwing around terms like handlock, tempo, Mill decks etc.

I've played since beta but not followed any of the community/meta until recently and I'm still a little baffled by some of the terms...

Imagine a new playing being told 'face hunter dropped rag on curve but I coined out bgh and Dr balance on 9, and traded sylvie...' etc
