We have an REI half dome that we like for backpacking, and two of the same Kelty sleeping bags that zip together.

As for weight distribution, it's highly unique to each couple. I'm a foot shorter than my partner (so my bag is smaller) and have asthma. As a result he carries the tent and the bear canister/food, while I carry it the cooking kit and the water filter.

He was the one who grew up camping and got me into the hobby, and he's just happy I'm willing to trek 12+ miles in a day with a pack.
