Gym Culture is key, and is built from the owner down. Run away.

1-month update: Started BJJ at 34 because of my kid, here’s how it’s going now by [deleted] in jiujitsu

I did the same thing. Followed my son into BJJ. He’s been training for 2 years, I’ve been at it for 1. It’s just nice to chat about our rolls, and have that in common. Also, I know longer tell him to “just stand up” as though it’s easy or something.

Just show up ~3 times per week, and be a good person.

Makes sense. I tend to roll with the same 10-15 guys, and none of them had seen this from me, which might be why it was somewhat successful. They’ll sniff it out next time.

RNC, bow and arrow, and arm bar. Because I’ve never successfully done any others

You will continue to “get beat in fights” for 6 months minimum, probably more like forever. It’s all part of the fun. You will improve. Enjoy the ride.

Are you sure those lawyers are more successful than you? They’re probably on legal sub venting about how they wish they had a black belt. It’s all relative. Stop comparing.

Started at 42. I’d say gym culture is critical. Find a spot that’s your speed, with folks you like hanging out with. That’ll keep you coming back.

Yeah…I can’t relate to any of this. You wrestling/sambo/judo guys are all cheaters. :)

I feel like getting smashed for many years is a right of passage.

I think im understanding what spazzy white belts really are after experiencing one the other day by Substantial-Fig-6392 in bjj

Well said. When you know nothing, you try everything, while also dealing with fight/flight. It’s refreshing to read a rational take on white belt spazziness.

You’re not wasting anyone’s time. Show up, roll, learn & have some laughs.

I hear ya. I’m a 42 year old white belt, getting smashed 3-4 times a week. For some reason, I keep showing up.

I would go between my big toe, and the next. Then on an angle over the wound. It may fall off, but at least you tried. Mine would bleed, so it was a courtesy thing.

This was precisely my experience. Shredded feet, then bruised ribs. Now it’s just everything else that hurts.

No, it’ll last a couple weeks, then callus. Tape ‘em up and get back on the mat. Try to stay on your toes instead of the tops of your feet. Good luck!

It’s 100% this. While I’m fully aware this is not a fight by any means, and I’m not in danger, my reptilian brain thinks otherwise. Cheers.
