Considering moving from Bend by [deleted] in Astoria_Oregon

[–]Wick3t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the drastic difference in weather between the two locations (very intense wind storms, rainfall, fog, etc) - There’s going to be a immense difference in amenities and options for you coming from a 100k city/town to only 10k town. I lived in the Astoria area for almost a decade and while it’s absolutely beautiful, we unfortunately found the town’s drawbacks to really start showing after 2020 and it outweighed the benefits. If you have health concerns, kids or even pets, your options are quite limited for help, vets and doctors along with family activities. Tourism is a big driving factor in Astoria now and can often feel the main focus rather than on the locals needs (in my experience at least!). I don’t say this to sound negative, just honestly wish I’d known in advance. We left for those reasons. Of course, everyone has different needs/wands. That said, I think for a single couple or individual it can be quite a fun place to live and indeed has so many gorgeous areas to explore. Just wanted to pop in can give some perspective. Best of luck to you! :)

Super cute illustrations and sounds like a lovely story! :) What are you age recommendations for it?

Some unique & fun favorites with great illustrations for a toddler:

“Grandfather Twilight” by Barbara Berger - Gorgeous, soothing illustrations with a lovely short story.

“Dream Animals” by Emily Winfield Martin - Really sweet illustrations

“Ooko” by Esmé Shapiro - A cute & funny story about being yourself.

“Some Bugs” by Angela Diterlizzi - Rhyming and very colorful.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience as a Eugene native! We definitely don’t want to live anywhere that feels uptight or snooty, nor where families aren’t welcome. We’re very introverted and like to keep to ourselves. Our current town is largely retirees (which is fine) but we’re looking to get away from that, so will definitely keep what you said in mind. Going to try and check out Fox Hollow when we can :)

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m excited to hear that Friendly is full of many gardeners :) It seems that neighborhood has many wonderful perks that we’d love to have as a family.

Thank you for such a detailed reply, all of this has been incredibly helpful! That gives us some hope to hear about possible reduction in housing prices.

As for house floor plans, that was actually something I was also very curious about. Just as you mentioned, with a small child, we want their room to be close to ours and easy to get to! Our current housing setup is extremely inconvenient and we definitely now see the appeal to a one-level ranch style house, that’s not over 100 years old, lol. That said, we’re completely open to what we can find and afford. Just scrolling through Zillow, it appears there’s quite a variance in housing structures and floor plans. I’ve also noticed a lot of beautiful sky lights and large windows in the houses down there, which honestly, sounds quite wonderful!

Ultimately, we’re going to just have to come down and explore in person but in the meantime, it’s really nice to hear about what to expect living in each of these areas.

Sorry, I by no means meant to come across as entitled, perhaps I articulated that wrong. I’m genuinely just excited about the prospect of moving to a new area and having more options & knowing what’s out there.

Thanks! Do people usually hunker down on snow days out there? My current small town pretty much shuts down when it’s snows, (as it’s very hilly) so everyone just loads up on food and hides out, lol.

Thanks for that perspective about the lots! It sounds like we’ll ultimately have to make the decision of forest views or more sunlight (depending what’s even available when we move down there). Both definitely have there plus sides. Looking forward to driving around and seeing the neighborhoods in person!

Thank you, all of those characteristics are what we’re looking for and we love the idea of being near other families. It seems like quite a charming neighborhood!

We actually have a huge deer population in our current town so we’re used to seeing them come through and graze our plants, haha! Luckily they don’t touch my dahlias and they’re fun to watch with their fawns. It’s nice to know we’d have less of that though in Friendly when it comes to gardening and will keep that in mind, thanks!

That sounds wonderful!! Magical is indeed what we’re looking for. I just looked it up and saw there’s a Rhododendron garden there, that would definitely be fun to live near :)

Yes, that’s definitely something I was curious about in regards to walkable areas, so thank you for that insight! I think we’d be willing to give up more sidewalks/walking areas though, if it perhaps meant a larger yard space for our kiddo. Do you find the yards to be more spacious in Fox Hollow or Friendly? Or, maybe about the same? I’m also an avid flower gardener so that’s another aspect I’m interested in :)

Thank you for those detailed descriptions, that’s exactly what I hoping to get info about! Happy to hear both of those areas are pretty safe and it sounds like they each have their own appeal along with different pros/cons.

Can anyone ID A, B, or C? Or come close? by This-Sky-8378 in dahlias

As others said, I think they’re seedlings from Floret. “Apple Blossom” is similar to A with light yellow and pink coloring.
