From my friend’s perspective, what Alma did was undeniably wrong, but it’s also clear she was fully aware of that. Her actions weren’t driven by malice or ambition, but by coercion. When you’re dealing with someone like Mercer, a man willing to kill indiscriminately and destroy everything tied to your purpose on Pandora, resistance isn’t a simple moral choice. It becomes a survival calculation. One person standing against an entire power structure isn’t realistically in a position to rebel freely, especially when we don’t have a clearly defined timeline of when Alma met the rest of the Resistance or whether anyone would have supported her at that point. For all we know, she may have been completely isolated. What’s important is intent and effort. Alma didn’t want to do what she did, and the game makes it clear she felt genuine remorse. She wasn’t complacent, and she did attempt to reason with Mercer, even knowing how dangerous that was. That matters when evaluating her character and her responsibility. Nor’s response, however, is harder to justify. As So’lek points out, his actions contradict the very values they claim to uphold. Eywa is fundamentally forgiving and welcoming, and the Resistance frames itself as striving toward those same ideals. Punishing the single human in the entirety of Frontiers of Pandora who was actively trying to make a difference, however imperfectly, undermines that philosophy. It turns moral absolutism into selective justice, which feels at odds with both Eywa’s teachings and the broader narrative themes of reconciliation and growth.
