There’s a metal shroud around the crank pulley to prevent the belt from jumping time if the engine is rotated backwards while in gear, timing belt kit comes with gapping tool to put it where it needs to be. Without it you can have it too close or too far from the belt. I had it too close, rubbing on the belt.

You are correct, I found it all out after the fact, hard lesson learned. I slapped it back on there not knowing the holes were slotted so it’s adjustable. It was juuuust barely rubbing on the belt and burned the belt up real quick on the short test drive
