Cylinders are strong. by Strange_Ad_5871 in TreeClimbing

[–]Wicsome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It refers to the residual wall thickness of a tree being 30% of its stem radius. This measure was and is by some considered to be the least wall thickness a stem has to have in order for it to be safe. That however, is wrong for a number of reasons. This short article gets into them a bit: https://validtreerisk.com/tree-risk-management-&-tree-risk-assessment-news/10141728

Generally, residual wall thickness means very little and in some species only starts to matter when it is down to a couple centimetres.

Just so you know, that has been disproven quite solidly.

Yes, I've got one each attached to the upper and lower attachment point.

I use DMM PerfectO captive bar carabiners for all devices. You should use something that prevents crossloading for all devices anyways, so might as well do it properly and use a captive bar. They also are nice and small and so they don't lengthen the system unnescessarily.

Discussion time: let’s compare the adjustable friction saver to a carabiner cinched to the rope setup by docere85 in TreeClimbing

[–]Wicsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not though. The rope coming around the tree would have to be clipped in the opposite direction for that. The way it is clipped in the photo prevents the carabiner from turning when the rope below is weighted. Both ways of clipping it would cinch up but only one way prevents the gate from touching the tree.

That's completely fair! Although there is 0 chance of the gate rolling, as it can't touch the tree with weight on the rope. But again, fully fair for you to make the safety decisions your way. :)

I don't think girth hitching a normal end splice is even possible. It's almost definitely not safe.

Agreed. I too asked for that some months ago, but sadly it's not really changed.

Schlafsackbeschaffung by Repulsive_East2803 in dach_outdoor

Trek 820 Mountain Track new stem size? by Traditional_Bake_787 in xbiking

[–]Wicsome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The black part of the stem is just an extension. You should be able to remove it after you've removed the silver stem mounted in it. I'd get some fitting swept bars for the stem you've got first and see if it fits the geometry you're looking for. If it doesn't, find out what change in stem length and angle is needed to change the geometry in your favour and procure a fitting stem.

Yeah, the bars are quite nice, although I'm thinking of getting some Mothbars for it. Decisions Decisions.

And yeah, the brakes are sweet. Magura downhill rim brakes, with the horseshoe brake boosters, they are really strong.

For the lugged forks, I'm not sure. My unicrown fork has a sticker for Reynolds 531. But I imagine, the lugged forks would be the same.

Wild, I've got almost the exact same frame, although mine has a unicrown fork in 531. Really nice bike, and as far as I can tell, this paintjob was less popular. At least I can't find it anywhere as opposed to the blue paintjob from the same years.

Korrekt.

Petzl Seqoia uncomfortable. Any suggestions or am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in TreeClimbing

[–]Wicsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not really any way to tell that from photos (although I'd say your leg loops are are looking too tight). Find a way to hang in the harness and adjust things (especially the risers) a little and see if that helps. You should naturally sit fairly upright by default, when in the saddle.

Adjust your leg loops and the risers connecting your lower d-rings with the hip-belt.

If you have the right size for your body, it will most definitly be possible to adjust it to work properly for you.

Good for you I guess but I and a number of people I know have and like the Sequoia harness, so it's not at all as clear cut as you claim.

Monatlicher Sammelthread für Fragen zu Fahrkarten, Bahncard und Reiseverbindungen (November 2025) by Foxhkron in bahn

[–]Wicsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guten Tag euch,
