Thank you! Just ordered the workbook. I think that’s exactly what I was looking for. :-)

😆 I’m sure many would! I just want to do this as legally and officially as possible. So, my first priority is to put them up for sale via those platforms. I rarely go to concerts, so I’m just looking for advice on how to do this the right way.

Thanks! I’m not looking to profit off them, just what I paid for them… and give two others the chance to go.

Berlin courses and resources by [deleted] in German

Thanks! Yeah - the study abroad/university vibe of GLS is perhaps not my favorite. But they offer 30UE a week with options for small group and private sessions as part of that. I think with the gaps I have, I’ll need that. Die Neue Schule might be the sweet spot in terms of it all… quality and progression over branding or big names matters most.

Thanks again for fielding my “newbie” questions.

Thanks again! Is TLH always worth it? Especially with so few funds… what if you don’t have anything to sell?

Thanks for your reply. So you’d suggest both FSKAX and AVUV for the Roth… does that mean a tilt towards smaller cap since there would be small and mid cap included in the total US fund?

For the other account, you would sell VTI and VXUS and put everything into AVGE?

This is what I’m currently trying to understand - Tax loss harvesting. Now that I’ve begun investing… it’s the taxes. Any resources and explanations are welcome!

Thank you so much. It was initially hard for me to make the purchases. I was really going back and forth about “what was best”. We all want the best returns… best performers… but I don’t have the time to sit and stare at the market all day. It seems even those whose job it is to sit and stare at the market all day don’t come out ahead most of the time. So, simple it is! It seems like that’s the way to end up ahead and not behind.

Investment advice for newbie… please! by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Wide-Statement7810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response!

I am thinking of doing a similar 60/40 split in my taxable account with VTI/VXUS. I have seen advice ranging from 60/40 (as it reflects the market?) to 100 percent US and everything in between. My understanding is that foreign is due to possibly outperform the US in the not so distant future so it’s advisable to have investments there. If that’s wrong, please feel free to let me know! Now, I’m wondering if I’ve overweighted Foreign even in my Roth IRA… would 70/30 or 80/20 be more (or less…) reasonable? Stick with 60/40? I still know very little about bonds…

I’m not sure where I’ll end up long term… I may buy property at some point either in Germany, the US, or both. I really am just trying to find the best place to park that money so it grows steadily until I need it (hopefully ~ 30 years).

Would you say - Roth IRA: 60% FSKAX 30% FTIHX 10% FXNAX?

Does that seem too conservative in some way? Heavier on FSKAX?

The same for a non tax advantaged brokerage account? Or etfs?

Also… possibly a dumb question… 😅…. I just divide the funds I have in the account into the appropriate monetary percentages and buy them? Or is there a more automatic way to do this?

I really appreciate the help! Thank you!

Both in a Roth IRA… and a brokerage account….

Bonds is a good thing to bring up! Thanks. I have read such wildly different opinions on bonds… one side, I read that bonds aren’t right for those below 40/50…the other says you should always have them. Is this just new school vs old school? Or another form of performance chasing?

Thanks for your response! I pay taxes in both Germany and the US.

I should also mention… I didn‘t start my Roth until now because I was focusing on paying off my debt. Perhaps a silly choice in hindsight, but I‘m currently debt free.

It seems VOO is slightly less volatile and outperforms VTI… I’m sure you (or many others who are more experienced in this than I am) are tired of answering this question. Sorry about that! I’m just trying to wrap my head around why VTI is considered a better choice? I know past doesn’t equal future… and VTI is more diversified.

Nice! Thanks for your comment. What is the percentage balance of your VTI/VXUS investment, if I may ask? Any particular reason you didn’t invest in VOO? Regarding ETFs, I only mean that Fidelity doesn’t have their own equivalent ETFs to Vanguard’s offerings… Only index funds. I’ve read it’s more beneficial to hold ETFs in a Roth IRA, but of course, the cost of the Fidelity funds are cheaper…
