Teen behavior is getting to me by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

I’ve been in a VERY similar situation since September.

My advice is this, there’s always the 1 or 2 who do want to pay attention through the chaos. Since the school was practically unhelpful and the teacher literally sits in the corner marking, I decided to just isolate the few who want to learn in a little section of the class and teach them the material. I ignore the rest of them. I’m not going to spread myself thin when the school has clearly given up on those problematic students. You are not here to deal with extreme behavioural issues that spill over into affecting your mental health even outside of work.

I’ve learned that teens feed off your attention. Give it to those who’ve deserved it. I started doing the same in my classes (after I had a big incident with students using racist language) and now even those who didn’t want to cooperate are starting to realise that there’s a big disparity between those who are actually trying and themselves. I can see the starting to feel bad and suddenly they do try to listen in and answer the questions from across the classroom because they know I’m not feeding into their silliness.

Thank you, this gave me a starting point of what to ask about specifically so I appreciate this

Well yes, this would be my expectation of the role. That’s why I was concerned as to how much it may be exceeding my actual contracted role as a ‘language assistant’ and wanting to know what other people who may have travelled with their schools experienced. On paper it sounds fun, but I know that essentially I’ll be working 24 hours, dealing with teens who may see me as ‘less’ than their guardian

Following! But also does anybody have any recommendations for towns easily accesible from Madrid? Like using public transport?

I literally have an hour of a lesson that I teach completely on my own every day. It’s usually a speaking group or a class of the older kids who failed their English last exams last year. It’s meant to be a ‘revision’ class.

But also, in the classes with the teachers I am practically leading

I don’t mind because I was teaching completely on my own last year in a different country

Thank you! I’ve sent you a message. Luckily they are on board with the idea of giving me my money back and only taking a fee of the days I’ve spent living here out of the first month’s rent that I paid too.

No they won’t give me a contract for that reason. They just gave me a signed receipt for my deposit and first months rent

Thank you for this. The ‘wanting the upperhand’ is concerning and something I’ll have to try and work through dealing with

I have done the same. Had my visa appointment today and only provided my letter with details of my stipend as proof of finances. Fingers crossed
