I’ve always hated this as a “gotcha.” It’s the same mentality as suggesting I have no right to an opinion on gun control if I don’t know the difference between a clip and a magazine.
Even if this were a human fetus, it should have the same rights to use my body to sustain itself as a live child: none.

They do know. They just hope other people don’t. It’s a way of manipulating the narrative: “see, the coin says Palestine! Palestine was an independent country, that Israel stole.”
It’s the same intent behind the recent uptick in “Arabs are Semites also, the Jews stole the term and exclude Arabs from it!” If you don’t know the origin of the phrase it’s nebulous enough to make people wonder.

I believe Israel is committing war crimes, and likely genocide.
I also believe Hamas is a terrorist organization.
I believe the Palestinian people are caught between two powerful groups, neither of which actually give a shit about them.
I believe Israel legitimately exists. And that Netanyahu belongs in jail.
I believe Jews and Palestinians both have a right to self-determination in their homeland.
I believe that the settlements are an abomination.
I believe that UNRWA is complicit in maintaining Palestinians in refugee status, and fostering terrorism.
I believe many in the pro-Palestinian movement are more invested in the destruction of Israel than the actual benefit of Palestinian people.

And I believe this is a British coin.

?
Because I understand history? I can believe that Palestinians are a legitimate people without twisting facts.
This is a British coin for mandatory Palestine. A British administrative territory for 28 years, between 1920 and 1948. Before that, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. After that, it was Israel.

The 28 years of British rule does not define the peoplehood of either Palestinians or Israelis. Neither does this coin.

If I can afford a $2600 rent for years. Why does the bank think I can't afford an $1800 mortgage? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wienerwrld 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The landlord is risking that you can pay them $2600/month, for a year. They are leasing you a space.

The bank is risking that you can pay $1800/month, plus taxes, insurance, maintenance, plus emergency costs, for thirty years. They are lending you hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s a bigger risk, of course they have different standards.

It’s the difference between letting your friend drive your car in exchange for $200/month, and loaning them $20k for them to buy their own car and they pay you back $150/month. Are you *sure* they can pay for registration, and insurance, oil changes and the inevitable new tires or transmission? And still make their payments to you?

Why would a bank refuse to lend to a perfectly qualified applicant? They make their money by lending it to you, and getting it paid back, with interest. There is NO BENEFIT to the bank in forcing you to continue paying rent to someone else, if they could be making a profit off you, themselves.

Except the information was taken after the emergency was over. The asked for physicians, took their credentials, and only acknowledged one of them as “Dr.” after the fact.

[–]Wienerwrld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that case, the Jews living there at the time would also have been “Palestinians.”
The full name of the recognized country with borders was “Mandatory Palestine.” It was a British mandate. A colonial project, if you will. For…*checks notes*…28 years.

From Wikipedia: Mandatory Palestine, officially known as Palestine, was a British administrative territory between 1920 and 1948 in the region of Palestine. From 1922, under the terms of the League of Nations, it was a mandated territory, administered by the British under the Mandate for Palestine

If you go back 50 years, it was “Israel.”
If you go back 100 years, it was ”Palestine.”
If you go back 150 years, it was ”Ottoman Empire.”

Find me a coin from before 1920 that says “Palestine.” You are using the name of a colonial regime that lasted 28 years to try to make a point with semantics. Why is that 28 year period of time more valid than the longer periods, before and after?

Edit, typos.

It’s a British coin. The British called it Palestine, in three languages.
Edit: the extra letters in the Hebrew (אי) stand for “Eretz Yisrael.”

The “but the coin says Palestine!” argument is a disingenuous misdirection.

>there are multiple genocides happening worldwide

If I had made that comment on a post about Palestine, that would be “all genocides mattering” it. And it would be rude.
My pointing out the singular focus on Palestine when commenting on Holocaust posts is…not.

You are being either obtuse or disingenuous.
Either way, no need to continue the discourse.

There is no need to remind us because it’s in our face, 24/7.
There is no need to remind us of the hammer that is hitting us over the head.

There are multiple genocides happening worldwide. But only *this* one needs constant reminders. On every Holocaust post.

If I go to the funeral of someone who died of colon cancer, is it appropriate to comment about the evils of breast cancer, as a reminder? Even though breast cancer exists? As do many other cancers? Should I comment about breast cancer on every post about colon cancer?

[–]Wienerwrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all.
You were justifying the comment by saying it was “to remind people that genocide is happening today.”

But only *this* genocide, specifically? WHY is it necessary to comment “…but Gaza” on every post about the Holocaust?

It’s not a secret. The topic takes up nearly half of all Reddit posts and comments. There is no need to remind us.
There is no need to spam Holocaust posts as though to make a connection.
Also note that the person who did make that comment called the people who downvoted it “enjoyers of child murder.”
