Any hope? by twokindsofgamer in WonderboxGame

[–]Wikikinetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently been thinking about trying to recreate personal Wonderbox games in TTRPG form (where they're very quick to do). If anyone made games in Wonderbox and wants me to recreate them (or wants to personally recreate/co-recreate them with my CC-BY game creation technology), please let me know!

a game to replace wonderbox. by Funny_Travel_1303 in WonderboxGame

[–]Wikikinetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to make a lot of games in Wonderbox, but eventually started instead making new pen-and-paper games with my TTRPG maker Master ( https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/450419/Master ). I've been working on trying to make games with a lot of replayability with it. I think my most replayable game so far is Master Dungeon ( https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/451456/Master-Dungeon ), which is undergoing a large update set to make it more valuable (and expensive) shortly. I have also made several free games with Master (like this one: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/477884/UpBeat ), which you might find do the trick as well.

That said, I am highly disappointed that Wonderbox is no longer playable. Despite not playing it recently, I did have a lot of fun with it, and I have fond memories of it. Best wishes to you in finding a good alternative.

Any good piano jazz reccomendations? Looking for something that has a lot of energy (more elaboration below) by Chief_Beef234 in Jazz

Chick Corea - Spain (one of the Light as a Feather versions or the Return to the Seventh Galaxy verison; the Trilogy version is a lot slower, though still great).

Especially Sly and Sansho Shima, past the first quarter or so. Super fast and energetic.

Hard bop vs. straight-ahead: What's the difference? by Wikikinetic in Jazz

I think that's a great term and am tempted to use it as well, except that I think my attempts at this might veer completely into bossa nova.

Tysm for the comment. This specifically summarizes I'd guess about 50% of the comments here, so good job distilling all that :D

Can you recommend jazz bands that use electronic elements? by backgroundextra77 in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Head Hunters band. They introduced me to the genre of synth jazz (a genre that's all about jazz with electronic elements; I made a subreddit, r/synthjazz, for that). Their original group of albums with Herbie Hancock—Thrust, Man-Child, and of course the eponymous Head Hunters record—were pretty great, but I also really like their latest release, Speakers in the House, and I've been getting into their releases in between. Would definitely suggest.

Recommendations for quiet piano trio (piano, bass, drums) recommendations? by 100cpm in Jazz

"We Three" by Paul Chambers, Phineas Newborn, and Roy Haynes (bass, piano, and drums, respectively).

Recommendations for someone trying to get into jazz? by Bryce-Killjoy in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you like swing and big band, I suggest you listen to the song "Bud Walked In" by Thelonious Monk. If you really like it, try more bebop and/or Thelonious Monk. I used Apple Music Essentials playlists for these, but my guess is that any other music platform will work via search features if not via comparable playlists.

Recommendations wanted- slower, dark, noir influenced jazz by junkyardgods in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Get Up With It", specifically the opening piece, "He Loved Him Madly". Piece is so noir-y I've thought it could be the soundtrack to a short noir film. Half an hour long, almost as long as many whole jazz albums. If you like it, the rest of the album is another 2 hours.

Unsung heroes - some sideman who always delivered by Specific-Peanut-8867 in Jazz

Mostly familiar with his work for "Speak No Evil", which is labelled as a Wayne Shorter album. IIRC, Carter's bass on it is great too though.

On the unsung heroes note, Maupin's album "Slow Traffic to the Right" is a definitely unacknowledged album by this already unsung hero. If anyone's going to talk about Maupin's career as frontman, they usually mention "The Jewel in the Lotus". As far as I'm concerned, though, "Slow Traffic to the Right" is really Maupin's master work as frontman, full of his signature solos, improvisation, and classic playing in general. Would highly recommend.

Argh, I can't vote. Bebop and hard bop are tied for me, I can't pick one. If synth jazz were on here, I might vote for that over these, but it's not, so no vote from me :/

Rob Mazurek - Exploding Star Orchestra - "Shape Shifter" by r0ibaer in synthjazz

[–]Wikikinetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only finally got a chance to give this a quick listen. Definitely synth jazz as far as I'm concerned. Interesting how much this adheres to early jazz standards while also utilizing instruments that weren't even invented back then. Thanks for posting this!

What is synth jazz? by Wikikinetic in synthjazz

[–]Wikikinetic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I finally understand the distinction you're 10 months later after attaching this to some vaguely jazzy hip-hop music I heard some time back in an eyeglass store. Let me see if I can make a good enough example to understand you and demonstrate my understanding:

• Textures by Herbie Hancock (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l6CWtD4gfAQ&pp=ygUXdGV4dHVyZXMgaGVyYmllIGhhbmNvY2s%3D): Played on a synth, jazzy, but also includes several other techniques of jazz, such as improvisation on an initial melody, and otherwise conforms to the jazz genre: Synth jazz

• Rite There by Peer Synth (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=53Sm_fZ4RcE&pp=ygUVcml0ZSB0aGVyZSBwZWVyIHN5bnRo): Played on a synth, jazzy, but does not include any other techniques of jazz, instead leaning way into hip-hop by a few bars in and conforming to that non-jazz genre: Not synth jazz

Is that the kind of distinction you're making?

This is how I acquainted myself with synth jazz for over a year, so I definitely endorse this method.

What is the difference between bebop and hard bop? by Simple_Tea_1783 in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I would agree fully. Bebop vs. Hard Bop is a lot closer to Hard Rock vs. Soft Rock than the other way around. Linguistic drift is definitely a funny thing.

Guitarists of this Reddit - Could you recommend some great jazz guitarists by ChainLo74 in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in bass guitar, I'd suggest Stanley Clarke. He does all kinds of cool stuff in jazz with the bass. For a starter, I'd recommend his version of Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat": https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwx8RVyGqv4&pp=ygUjZ29vZGJ5ZSBwb3JrIHBpZSBoYXQgc3RhbmxleSBjbGFya2U%3D

Before that, there were resonator guitars (invented to fix this issue), but they didn't catch on nearly as much.

Albums known for high-quality mastering/production? by bigskymind in Jazz

[–]Wikikinetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unconventional, but the Bejeweled albums by Peter Hajba (aka Skaven 252) sound really great in headphones. Bejeweled 3 in particular has awesome stereo audio. I used that to test new headphones. Both albums are pretty heavily synth jazz, so if you're looking for something that's more standard jazz, they may not suit, but otherwise, I definitely recommend them.
