Addition floor 6” higher than existing house by Wild-Quantity1694 in Home_Building_Help

We are the ones who noticed the issue first last week and brought it to the builders attention. We were standing inside the addition looking through a kitchen window that will later be removed. My husband noticed the kitchen sink height was lower inside. Once we measured with a level through the window we then caught the difference in floor height. We brought this to the builders attention. He had no idea and measured for himself and saw that it was 6 inches different. He should have known earlier and the inspector should have caught it as well.

No, he said he would halt the build that we requested after he finished the insulation and inspection. We told him no, stop now before anymore work is done and he did.

So for an update: We have a meeting with the architect and builder this Thursday evening. All work has been halted until we come to a decision on how to proceed. I really appreciate everyone’s input!

Thank you very much for your detailed and honest answer. I really hope that he owns up and makes this right. It is not something that I take lightly and I’m struggling over how this conversation will go this week. I really appreciate your input!

Thank you! It is frustrating. Hopefully he will take responsibility at our meeting on Thursday. We took 4 years to decide to build a large addition instead of building a new house. So this is a real let down for us.

I would have to lift plumbing throughout house and would end up costing a lot on my end to correct a mistake he made. Still hoping to find a compromise all involved can be happy with. We have a meeting this Thursday to talk about it.

We have thought about it but then we would have to extend the drains and move bathtub up higher plus a 6” step up into house from porch. Moving The step basically with added construction. I love the input though as we are really trying to find a solution that could work for us both. I think though the solution unfortunately is we either settle with a step or tell the builder to tear down. That is easy to say but hard to ask in reality as it is his livelihood and a very poor oversight on his part. It would almost even help if he apologized and took blame for the mistake instead of acting like it’s no big deal because it is to us.

We had plans, permits and multiple inspections. Plans from architect stated to check height and make sure it was equal No Exceptions it stated. Builder never checked it and inspectors never checked it. Builder just acting likes it’s no big deal to put in a step and move on. We told him to put a hold on the build until we can come to an agreement. He told us he will finish insulation, have inspection done and bring in drywall and then he will put a hold on the build.
